Senior Transmission Engineer
About the role
Position Overview We are seeking a Senior Transmission Planning Engineer to ensure the long-term reliability, stability, and regulatory compliance of the provincial transmission system. In this role, your work will directly support Mandatory Reliability Standards (MRS), long-term planning, and system performance analysis across 1-, 5-, and 10-year horizons. As a senior member of the team, you will lead complex technical studies, maintain and enhance system models, collaborate with operations to ensure accurate data inputs, and communicate findings to senior leadership and regulatory bodies in clear, actionable terms. Position Requirements Must-Haves Technical Expertise: Minimum of 8 years of hands-on experience using Siemens PSS®E for power flow, stability, and transmission planning studies. Industry Experience: 10+ years of experience performing power flow analysis, long-term planning, and reliability assessments. Professional Credentials: Registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) or fully eligible for registration with Engineers and Geoscientists British Columbia (EGBC). Regulatory & Compliance: Deep familiarity with NERC/WECC reliability standards and compliance reporting, alongside direct experience contributing to Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity (CPCN) filings, gathering facts, and supporting regulatory evidence packages. Communication & Technical Writing: Proven ability to communicate complex technical engineering concepts and findings into simplified, actionable terms for regulatory bodies, senior management, and cross-functional teams. Plusses / Preferred Assets Advanced Written Communication: Exceptional clarity in drafting engineering reports, regulatory submissions, and executive summaries. Analytical & Modelling Skills: Strong capability to interpret complex datasets, forecast trends, model future system conditions, and utilize complementary modelling platforms or scripting for automation. Core Responsibilities Reliability, Compliance & Analysis Mandatory Reliability Compliance: Conduct annual power flow and transient stability studies to demonstrate strict compliance with NERC/WECC MRS. System Stress Testing: Run consistency and stress analyses across 1-, 5-, and 10-year horizons to ensure the network consistently meets reliability thresholds. Annual Power Flow Analysis: Produce forward-looking 5–10-year system assessments and present comprehensive findings to internal and external stakeholders. Long-Term Planning & System Modelling Long-Term Planning Support: Contribute technical expertise to 5-year and 20-year capital plans, electric vehicle (EV) load modelling, resource planning, and regulatory processes. Database & Model Maintenance: Maintain network topology, forecasts, and operational data to ensure models reflect the most accurate system conditions. Load Forecasting Integration: Work hands-on with load forecast teams to understand adoption rates, timing, and direct impacts on system planning. Stakeholder Collaboration & External Coordination Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with operations, regulatory teams, and external partners to identify, evaluate, and prioritize critical transmission projects. WECC & Utility Coordination: Exchange vital data, maintain regional models, and support interconnected reliability efforts with BC Hydro and WECC.
