About the role

This is an exciting new position, based in beautiful Smithers, BC. We are seeking a well-rounded project manager, with a solid construction background. We are willing to train a talented and energetic person, with strong leadership and management abilities, who does not yet meet all the currently desired skills and abilities.

Job Purpose

Reporting to the Vice President, the Construction Project Manager is responsible for general oversight of the project portfolio, management of construction staff, implementation of the company health and safety system as relates to construction projects, project development and execution.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide overall leadership and management support to the VP

  • Implement the corporate OH&S policies and procedures within the project and project team

  • Manage and direct employee base to execute construction and camp installation projects ranging from light industrial stick frame construction to full envelope design build industrial construction projects such as vehicle maintenance shops, emergency vehicle storage garages, arctic corridor construction and temporary camp module installation

  • Executing projects with goal of maintaining or improving company profitability, quality of deliverables, and company reputability

  • Be the lead in project logistical and operational needs as they arise; troubleshooting

  • Work with HR as needed, for recruitment, employee evaluation and non-compliance

  • Role is partially field based at active projects as designated by the VP

  • Support VP to create estimates for construction/camp projects

  • Develop operational and auditing procedures for camp maintenance and construction staff

  • Ensure the construction operations are running efficiently, safely and to plan

  • Lead, develop and supervise teams

  • Assist other managers as requested, time permitting

  • Manage Summit fleet as it relates to insurance, National Safety Code (NSC) compliance, vehicle maintenance, vehicle repairs, and fleet procurement

  • Additional tasks as time permits

Qualifications

Desired Skills and Abilities:

  • Modular Construction industry experience would be ideal

  • Five plus years progressive managerial experience, including project management experience

  • Demonstrated experience creating, leading and developing successful work teams

  • Strong leadership abilities with demonstrated results, able to take a lead and make things happen

  • Three plus years of experience creating estimates for construction/camp projects would be ideal but not required

  • Collaborative team player

  • Advanced, professional and well-rounded communication skills

  • Strong critical thinking and analytical skills

  • Resourceful and creative problem solver

  • Must possess a current Class 5 driver's license, with a good driving record

Education and Experience:

  • Prefer related professional designation such as Project Management Professional (PMP) or equivalent education and/or experience

  • Journeyman certification for ITA Red Seal or equivalent carpenter certification is considered an asset

  • Minimum of 3 years in a project management role

Working Conditions

This is a salaried position and as such, is not limited to a forty-hour work week. The position workload is split between office work and field work depending on project timelines and needs. Regular travel is required to be present at the work site for shifts of length up to 3 weeks long. Evening and weekend work are required to meet workload and operational needs.

Physical Requirements

Work is often field based with long work shifts and long workdays. The ability to monitor energy and focus on conservation is necessary. There will be a need to lift/push/pull up to 50 lbs. Field supervision will require good physical mobility and could include hiking to work sites and a variety of forms of transportation. Ability to conduct construction tasks such as repetitive hammer motion, lifting heavy and awkward construction materials, and lengthy repetitive motion such as flooring fastening are all aspects of the job.

Compensation

  • $90,000 base salary, plus additional compensation for offsite, remote project work
  • Comprehensive health, dental, disability and life insurance plan after 90 days of employment
