As an Assistant Miller you are vital to our milling process, the Assistant Miller is responsible for operating the A and B Mill. Ensuring quality of the finished product, specifically the production from the kiln, groat grading, steel cut grading, and secondary grading systems. This position is responsible for producing oat products to be safely delivered within spec to the customer and end consumer. Other areas of responsibilities are operating and understand colour sorters and Q-sorters along with record keeping, sanitation, planning, coordinating, and communication. This position is critical for promoting safety, quality, milling efficiencies, and helping achieve the company's goals and objectives.
DutiesResponsibilities:
- Conduct equipment adjustments and product testing to maximize quality and yield
- Ensure quality of the finished product and specifically from the production of the kiln, groat grading, steel cut grading, and secondary grading systems
- Responsible for handling and processes of Gluten Free products and must ensure product is in spec and compliant with GF guidelines
- Recognize, understand and follow all procedures in identifying the kiln as a preventative control measure within the food safety program
- Minimize downtime, monitoring and ensuring quality of the product
- Monitor and document production data using computerized systems
- Perform daily maintenance checks and troubleshoot system performance issues
- Communicate effectively with team members across departments to ensure seamless operations
- Support sanitation duties and maintain a clean, food-safe working environment
- Act as a team member by helping other departments as needed
Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or equivalent (required).
- Previous experience in a grain milling or processing environment is an asset.
- Strong mechanical aptitude with the ability to operate and maintain complex milling equipment.
- Familiarity with Gluten-Free grain handling and compliance procedures is preferred.
- Ability to recognize off-spec product characteristics (e.g., color, size, odor) through visual and sensory inspection.
- Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Organizational and decision-making abilities with strong attention to detail.
- Computer literacy, including proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word).
- Ability to work safely in a fast-paced, dusty, hot, cold, and noisy environment.
- Comfortable working at heights, in confined spaces, and around moving machinery (PPE provided).
- Strong commitment to teamwork, safety, and continuous improvement.
Hours of work
This position will be working 12-hr Modified shift schedule, including Weekend and night shifts.
