The opportunity:

Perform a range of professional and detailed accounting activities program including accounts reconciliation, journal entries, month-end, and year- end close, review of account receivable transactions, financial analysis and transaction investigation and adjustment. The Senior Accountant plays a vital role in ensuring accurate accounting of revenues and expenses to various March of Dimes Canada programs to allow accurate variance analysis against budgets and estimates.

Responsibilities:

  • Prepare accurate and timely reconciliations of General Ledger accounts.
  • Develop and maintain monthly journal entries.
  • Prepare and reconcile balance sheet accounts and generate timely correction entries as necessary.
  • Investigate and analyse discrepancies, identify root cause and create adjustment entries by applying accounting standards, MODC and funder policies; communicate the results or action plan with program.
  • Analyze monthly variances between budget/forecast and actual financial results; provide accurate, complete, and timely month end narrative analysis to Financial Services Manager for review.
  • Fulfil other external reporting requests as required.
  • Assist with the budget and forecast process from data preparation, collection to data validation.
  • Provide ongoing support to program staff with regards to inquiries such as transaction correction, Visa and other investigation and related accounting treatment.
  • Communicate concerns/issues raised by programs with relevant parties and provide updates to program in timely fashion.
  • Vendor management, accounts payable management
  • Organize, maintain, follow and communicate policies, procedures, processes and guidelines to meet the program’s needs in accordance with organizational standards.
  • Provide ongoing support for identified initiatives and other responsibilities as required.
  • Provide back-up support for the Financial Services Manager as required.
  • Review Accounts Receivable transactions and provide training as needed.
  • Assist in annual audit.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Commerce and/or Business Administration specializing in Accounting.
  • In the final stages or the completion of a professional accounting designation (CPA, CGA or CPA, CMA).
  • A minimum of 2 years progressive hands-on experience.
  • Excellent knowledge of accounting practices & procedures.
  • Experience with Dynamics 365, Microsoft Great Plains or Navision software.
  • Advanced computer skills and superior knowledge of computer applications with emphasis on MS Office such as Word, Power Point. Extensive experience with Excel is required, such as Pivot, Vlookup, macros, Power Pivot functions, and business intelligence (BI) tools, etc.
  • Experience with Customer Relationship Management programs
  • Excellent communication (written and verbal), organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience working in a team-oriented collaborative environment.
  • Ability to set priorities, meet deadlines and handle a high volume of work.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a solutions-oriented approach to challenges. Demonstrate initiative in dealing with varied situations that arise, seeking direction as required.
  • Attention to detail and high level of accuracy.
  • Experience working in the not-for-profit sector considered an asset.

Hybrid work arrangement (our office is located at 99 Duncan Mill Road, Toronto, ON, M3B 1Z2)

Salary: $56,632 - $70,790 annually
