We are currently searching for dedicated, qualified Personal Support Workers to join our dynamic Personal Support Worker Resource Teams. The Personal Support Worker, or PSW, is a caregiver who works under the direction of a supervisory (e.g. Registered Nurse or Registered Practical Nurse). All Personal Support Workers hired into London Health Sciences Centre are hired on the Personal Support Worker Resource Team which supports both University Hospital and Victoria Hospital.

Department Description

PSW Resource Team

The Personal Support Worker Resource Team (PSW RT) operates within the Professional Practice portfolio under the strategic leadership of the Director of Professional Practice. The Personal Support Worker (PSW) is an unregulated caregiver who is assigned and supervised by a Regulated Healthcare Professional. Their scope of practice includes the provision of care focusing on patients' activities of daily living.

The PSW RT is a team of dedicated Personal Support Workers whose shifts are assigned to clinical areas to meet appropriate staffing requirements throughout the organization. The PSW RT responds to needs based on organizational need, replacement of sick time, vacation relief, known vacancies, observational care, etc. PSWs are assigned to multiple units, also referred to as "clusters" of units, based on organizational need and their training. Members of the PSW RT have the opportunity to work on a variety of clinical areas and experience a variety of learning opportunities in a supportive environment. PSWs are provided with comprehensive orientation and on unit training. Day to day leadership is provided by the Coordinator, PSWRT and further support is provided by a dedicated Clinical Educator. This team is integral in supporting clinical units throughout the organization, and a great way for a PSW to learn and grow as a valued team member in supporting exceptional patient care.

Availability

  • This is a Regular Part-Time position with no guarantee of hours
  • It is a requirement of this role to be available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week (24/7)
  • You can be pre-scheduled up to 75 hours bi-weekly at the discretion of The Hospital

Qualifications

  • Proof of successful completion of a PSW certificat from a recognized Ontario PSW program, or an Internationall Educated Nurse (IEN)
  • Proof of current Basic Life Support for Health Care Providers certificate: BLS-HCP (C)
  • At least 1 year of related experience working in acute healthcare environment or Long-Term Care or retirement homes preferred
  • Ability to read, write, comprehend, and communicate effectively in English
  • Must be able to meet the physical requirements of the position, including bending, lifting, twisting, etc.
  • Excellent communication abilities and interpersonal skills to interact positively and effectively with patients, staff, and the general public
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize multiple and changing tasks that require attention to detail
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively as a member of a team
  • Demonstrated practice and commitment to the principle of patient/family centred care with a service-oriented attitude
  • Basic computer and keyboarding skills: Windows Environment, Netscape/Internet, and GroupWise
  • Ability to problem-solve and demonstrate initiative within appropriate scope of practice
  • Knowledge of patient requirements with respect to prescribed diets/menus
  • Demonstrated knowledge of protocol to escalate concerns
  • Must be self-directed and show initiative
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Demonstrated computer proficiency with Automated Clinical Systems
  • Demonstrated practice and commitment to patient and staff safety at LHSC
  • Demonstrated practice and commitment to LHSC's vision, purpose, and values
  • Demonstrated ability to attend work on a regular basis
