About the role

  • Job Summary and Qualifications:

    • Reporting to the Patient Care Manager, the Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) in the Emergency Department works in collaboration with the entire health care team, the patient and family. Responsible for primary care of Emergency patients. The main functions of the RPN include, but are not limited to: assessment, intervention, education and patient advocacy in the Purple (minor) and Orange (ambulatory) zones. The RPN supports the philosophy of Person-Focused Care concept and principles and the mission and values of Sunnybrook. The RPN works closely with other members of the multidisciplinary team.

      Qualifications/Skills

      • Current registration in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario with no restrictions to practice as a Registered Practical Nurse
      • RPN diploma required
      • Current B.C.L.S. Certificate
      • 12+ months recent acute care nursing experience preferred or recent RPN experience
      • Successful completion of pre-interview knowledge assessment tool.
      • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
      • Ability to adapt to a fast-changing and stressful environment
      • Demonstrated commitment to continuing education within the past two (2) years with emphasis placed on courses/conferences related to Emergency is preferred
      • Demonstrated commitment to organizational initiatives, such as participation in nursing council, unit committees, and quality improvement projects
      • Demonstrated effective ability in: interpersonal relationships; oral and written communication skills; organization skills; priority setting skills; problem solving; decision making; facilitating team work; conflict resolution
      • Ability to integrate and apply critical thinking skills to patient care
      • Ability to handle stressful environment in a positive manner
      • Demonstrated ability to organize and prioritize patient care assignments within the RPN scope of practice collaboratively with RNs and other members of the inter-professional team.
      • Demonstrated commitment to Person Centre Care approach and principles
