About the role

Purpose:

The Residence Staff Member is a key contributor to Alberta Ballet School team ensuring a welcoming environment and safe operation for our students living at residence. Our students attend our School full time and are from around the world and across Canada.

This position executes all aspects of residence life ranging from general supervision, doctor’s appointments, emergency hospital visits, taking care of sick students, emotional support, adherence of residence rules, light housekeeping and kitchen duties, chaperoning events and assistance required by the School.

The Residence Assistant role will report directly to the Head of Residence.

We are seeking candidates who are interested in working 20+ hours per week on a regular basis. Employees who are employed consistently at thirty (30) hours per week or more are eligible for additional compensation and benefits.

Responsibilities:

Health & Safety of Students

  • Treat all students with respect and understanding
  • Maintain Occupational Health and Safety, First Aid, Food Safe and universal precaution guidelines and procedures
  • Recognize students' healthcare needs and refer to medical services when appropriate
  • Escort students to medical appointments as required.
  • Communicate emergency situations promptly to co-workers and supervisors
  • Complete required documentation accurately and in a timely manner

Supportive Residence Environment

  • Ensure availability to students at any time during shifts
  • Responsible for the well-being of students in the residential setting and to assist in all elements of residential care for students, in all aspects of personal hygiene, including laundry, minor household maintenance, maintaining order and cleanliness and the upkeep of their accommodation
  • Provide appropriate support for students during emotional and physical crisis.
  • Actively discourage students from engaging in improper behaviour, including sexual liaisons, bullying, rowdiness, or any other activity which could be of harm to other students or bring the Alberta Ballet School into disrepute.
  • Assist in preparation and supervision of meal service and clean up.
  • Perform light housekeeping and kitchen duties.
  • Ensure students complete weekly meal selections on time.
  • Maintain an attractive residence environment, including updating decorations etc.
  • Encourage an inclusive environment for students by assisting and coordinating group activities and identifying activities of interest to students while exploring alternate avenues of interest.
  • Exhibit sensitivity to and respect the rights of the individual students, including their emotional and physical needs.
  • Serve as a role model, advocate and mentor for the individuals we support.
  • Required to be on-call during a night shift from 11pm-6am
  • Assist in the turnover between residence closures and summer schools with general maintenance and cleanliness.
  • Refer higher level conflict matters with parents, students etc. to Head of Residence for mitigation.

Administration

  • Communicating with other staff members via communication logbook each shift.

  • Completing some light administrative duties. (E.g. submitting meal orders, updating rosters, etc.

  • Assist with other administrative or operational tasks as needed.

Qualifications & Key Competencies

  • Experience working with and providing care to youth ages 12 to 20.

  • Previous experience in a residential life setting (e.g., post-secondary, boarding school, shared residence services) would be an asset.

  • Current Standard First Aid & CPR Certificate is preferred.

  • Minimum of High School Diploma. Certificate in Child Care or other social / support careers would be an asset.

  • Reliable transportation and valid driver’s license.

  • Effective communication and people skills, with a proven ability to develop rapport and mentoring relationships.

  • Ability to work under pressure and be adaptable.

  • Ability to work within a diverse multicultural supportive environment.

  • Knowledge or interest in youth development and the performing arts.

  • Proven teamwork abilities but must also be self-motivated and able to work independently.

  • Sound time-management and prioritization skills.

  • Candidates must pass a criminal and vulnerable sector check.

  • Student Residence operates 24/7 with 3 closures within a year (Christmas Break, Spring Break and Summer - August)

  • Hours of work will require regular evening and weekend work, overnights, and most national holidays.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, use hands, and speak and hear. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 15 pounds.

  • Requirement of being available for an on-call shift per week to cover illnesses (student or employee) is required.
