The Law Society is seeking a 12-month term, full-time Staff Lawyer, Practice & Equity Advisor in our Practice Advice department.
The Staff Lawyer, Practice & Equity Advisor has a combined role within the Practice Advice department.

The focus of the Practice Advisor role is to provide confidential ethics and practice management advice to lawyers and articling students, providing guidance on professional obligations (including on issues relating to confidentiality, conflicts of interest, undertakings, withdrawal), managing client relationships and relationships with other lawyers, and developing practice support resource materials. The focus of the Equity Advisor role is to provide confidential advice, information and assistance to lawyers, support staff and articling students on issues of bullying, discrimination, and harassment in the context of the practice of law, including developing related practice support resource materials. The Practice & Equity Advisor role involves frequent contact with lawyers and articling students.

Other duties of this position include:

  • Preparing articles for publishing on the Law Society website
  • Coordinating Practice Checklist manuals
  • Developing and updating practice support materials.
  • Preparing and presenting speaking engagements and organizing courses.
  • Analyzing issues of concern to lawyers and making recommendations for action such as changes to the Law Society Rules and the Code of Professional Conduct for BC.
  • Assisting the Law Society in the development of the content of its equity and diversity initiatives including educational sessions, publications, and policy development.
  • Such other duties as the Director, Policy & Practice may require.

Qualifications

  • Practising membership in the Law Society of BC or eligibility for membership.
  • A minimum of five years of recent practice experience, including extensive experience in resolving bullying, discrimination, and harassment concerns.
  • Expertise in mediation and conflict resolution.
  • Exemplary listening skills and a demonstrated ability in communicating in a respectful, trauma-informed, culturally and emotionally safe manner.
  • Superior writing and excellent interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills.
  • Ability to meet changing deadlines and work in highly stressful situations.

The terms and conditions of the collective agreement between the Law Society and Professional Employees Association apply to this position. This position is within the Practice Advice & Standards job classification and the salary range for this position is $138,405.92 to $167,715.88.
