About the Position: ALS Environmental in Thunder Bay is hiring a Production Assistant to support the daily operations of our environmental laboratory. This position is ideal for individuals who thrive in a dynamic, detail-oriented setting and are looking to gain hands-on experience in logistics, inventory, and sample handling. You’ll play a key role in ensuring high-quality support for analytical testing by maintaining smooth, efficient, and organized sample receiving and shipping processes.
Specific Responsibilities: The Production Assistant works closely with lab and logistics teams to support the timely and accurate handling of environmental samples and supplies. Tasks include, but are not limited to:
Client & Sample Receiving
- Welcome and assist clients and couriers in the sample receiving area
- Receive incoming samples and coolers
- Unpack and layout samples in the order of the submission, ensuring accurate processing
- Verify labels for accuracy and completeness
- Ensure the sample receiving area is clean, organized, and presentable at all times
- Clean and manage coolers after sample login
- Follow internal Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and analytical quality procedures
Delivery Management & Shipping
- Prepare bottle orders and sample preservatives for shipping to clients
- Review and double-check bottle orders prepared by others for accuracy and completeness
- Package and ship samples using appropriate couriers and protocols
- Organize, prioritize, and track bottle and sample shipments to ensure timely delivery
- Process return shipments of laboratory supplies
- Receive incoming shipments and distribute supplies to appropriate departments
Inventory & Supplies
- Take weekly stock counts of sample bottles and laboratory shipping supplies
- Maintain organized and accurate inventory of general lab and shipping materials
- Ensure proper restocking and storage of inventory items
Facility & Operations Support
- Assist with basic building maintenance tasks as needed
- Observe and follow all ALS safety policies and regulations
- Maintain a clean and safe work environment
- Support other departments as needed and perform other duties as assigned by the Lab Manager
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Strong English communication skills (speaking, listening, reading, and writing)
- Ability to use Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) at a basic level
- Basic computer literacy for data entry and tracking
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy in a fast-paced, repetitive environment
- Good organizational skills and ability to meet tight deadlines (e.g., Turnaround Times and holding requirements)
- Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively with others
- A strong work ethic with flexibility to take on various support tasks as needed
- Client-focused mindset with a commitment to quality and efficiency
Physical Demands:
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs (23 kg) and carry items over short distances
- Frequent walking, bending, kneeling, and standing for extended periods
- Manual dexterity to complete intricate and repetitive tasks efficiently
- Comfortable wearing PPE such as gloves, dust masks, and other safety gear when required
- Potential exposure to unpleasant odors or cool environments (from sample storage)
