As a Senior Planning Services Technician, you will act as a significant front-line resource, by providing technical advice and planning guidance to internal and external customers. Primary duties include:
- Provide technical interpretations of the Land Use Bylaw, regulations (for example: the Municipal Government Act, Airport Regulations), and other related guidelines.
- Review, analyze, and render a decision on all applications that come into the area after intake at the front counter including, but not limited to, development permits, tenancy changes, building permits, and certificates of compliance.
- Conduct training sessions; prepare and set up training materials and create training strategies in coordination with other Senior Planning Services Technicians.
- Perform and manage bylaw checks.
- Conduct land use recommendation analyses.
- Coordinate with management and other Senior Planning Services Technicians regularly to ensure work areas are operating efficiently, including workload distribution, relief, staff distribution, timelines, and ensuring performance standards are met.
- Create and implement process improvements for a variety of permits.
- Ensure information pamphlets and document templates are continually brought up to date and checked for accuracy and are used appropriately by internal and external customers.
Qualifications
- A completed 2 year technical diploma in Urban Planning, Architecture or related field and at least 3 years of related experience, including 1 year of customer service experience working with the public.
- Experience interpreting Calgary's Land Use bylaw.
- The ability to interpret architectural, engineering and survey drawings.
- Intermediate proficiency with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word and Excel) is an asset.
- You demonstrate initiative, good judgment, and sound decision making skills.
- Success in this role requires the following competencies: the ability to maintain high attention to detail and accuracy when handling an increased workload with changing priorities; strong customer focus, negotiation and conflict resolution skills; the ability to work independently and in a team environment and effective multi-tasking skills to meet tight deadlines.

Workstyle: This position may be eligible to work from home for at least part of the time as one of several flexible work options available to City employees. These arrangements depend on the operational requirements of the role, employee suitability, and are subject to change based on operational needs and corporate direction.

Position Type: 6 Permanent and 3 Temporary (up to 12 months)
Location: 800 Macleod Trail SE
Compensation: Pay Grade 10 $42.62 - 56.97 per hour
Days of Work: This position typically works a 5 day
work week, with 1 day off in each 3 week cycle.
Hours of work: Standard 35 hour work week
