Position Description
The Registered Nurse, Newborn Screening (NBS RN) functions in a nursing role to coordinate the interdisciplinary assessment, planning, care and education of patients and families throughout the newborn screening process. In collaboration with the health care team the NBS RN plays an integral role in patient/family retrieval, counseling and early management of patients and families identified through a provincial screening program. The NBS RN acts as a resource person to patients/families, other health care professionals and referral centers. They also contribute to excellence in patient care, research, and teaching and in providing leadership to the NBS program.
Here's What You'll Get To Do
- Triages all positive newborn screens and communicates directly with referring practitioners and patients outside physicians.
- Provides first line of contact by telephone to identified children with positive result and act as a facilitator to obtain further samples to confirm diagnoses.
- Assesses physical, psychosocial, developmental, spiritual, cultural, educational and genetic counseling needs of children and families.
- Anticipates and identifies crisis situations arising from specific illnesses and/or illness management in both child and family.
- Develops/participates in the development of an individualized nursing care plan in collaboration with the child/family and the health care team.
- Documents on and participates in the development of the interdisciplinary plan of care.
- Participates in research and publication in NBS.
- Monitors, modifies, and executes protocols for caring for children affected by specific disorders.
- Provides expert consultation to children/families, HSC staff, community agencies, referring health care professionals, the childs outside physicians and other caregivers (Home Care Nurses and Coordinators, Public Health Nurses, Social Workers, Agencies), network partners, provincial, national and international centres.
Here's What You'll Need:
- Graduate of an approved Baccalaureate Nursing Program
- Registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario as a Registered Nurse
- Pediatric experience preferred. Experience with endocrine, metabolic and/or sickle cell patient populations preferred.
- Basic proficiency with computers is essential (i.e. word processing, excel and computerized documentation system (Epic preferred).
- Strong communication, interpersonal and organization skills.
- Demonstrated problem solving abilities, critical thinking skills and ability to work within a team.
- A willingness and flexibility to meet priorities and emerging demands.
- A commitment to understanding and aiding in the pursuit of equity, diversity & inclusion.
