RESPONSIBILITIES:
As an integral member of the Laboratory team responsibilities include:

Upholding the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario (CMLTO) Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice.

Upholding the Regulated Health Professions Act as it relates to their CMLTO certification.
-
Participating in staff and patient experience and feedback initiatives, professional development, teaching/educational activities, safety and quality improvement programs to ensure excellence in the provision of services.
-
Observing and understanding RVH and Laboratory departmental policies and procedures.
-
Adhering to the RVH and the Laboratory departmental mission and vision statements while maintaining patient personal health information and confidentiality.
-
Maintaining and understanding working knowledge of infection control concepts.
-
Participate in all quality and safety audits, self-assessments and peer visits as required.
RELATED DUTIES:
The Systems Administrator related duties include:
- Supporting the flow of clinical/statistical information/results to/from the Laboratory Information System (LIS), other internal and external modules, physicians and clients, EMR and other departments.
- Supporting the Laboratory for system downtimes, upgrades and recovery.
- Troubleshooting LIS/POCT problems, both hardware and software, including with vendors when necessary.
- Liaising with Clinical Informatics and Applications, Decision Support, other IT departments, other departmental Information Systems Coordinators and Application Specialists.
- Assisting with the building, updating and maintenance of the Laboratory Information System dictionaries.
- Assisting with the programming of custom reports for clinical and information purposes.
- Assisting with the programming/testing of all analyzer interfaces.
- Providing training and in-service of key Laboratory staff.
- Supporting IT/CIA with problems with connectivity and barcode printers.
- Assisting with general aspects of Meditech training, procedure manuals and documents according to Accreditation Canada-Diagnostics requirements for LIS and POCT.
- Collaborating with Application Specialists, locally and regionally, to implement computerized and logistical improvements.
- Participating in regional initiatives with respect to Meditech interface and/or interfaces with other health care institutions and/or provincial reporting systems.
- Performing laboratory procedures as outlined in the procedure manuals for the discipline - specific functions.
- Assisting with the training, education and recertification requirements of POCT users.
- Participates in the evaluation of instrumentation and assays for potential POCT implementation.
- Performing validation and correlation studies on all POCT testing devices as per requirements.
- Assisting with distribution of external quality assurance (EQA) materials as it pertains to POCT.
- Assisting with compiling statistics and reports related to Laboratory services and POCT.
- Performing other related duties consistent with the job classification, as assigned, requested, or required.

SKILLS/ABILITIES:
- Demonstrated knowledge of Accreditation Canada-Diagnostics program required.
- Demonstrated knowledge of current LIS, POCT, and related technologies, with a strong ability to continuously develop and expand expertise in both areas to meet evolving clinical and diagnostic needs.
- Demonstrated interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively and professionally with staff, physicians, volunteers, patient families, and visitors.
- Demonstrated excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Demonstrated excellent organizational skills and ability to handle multiple projects at a time.
- Demonstrated ability to perform duties independently and as a team member, with high degree of motivation and independent judgement.
- Demonstrated commitment to excellent attendance and schedule flexibility.
- Demonstrated excellent conflict resolution and change management skills.

- Demonstrated proficiency with keyboarding, Laboratory Information Systems (Meditech preferred), MS Office, internet use and other computer software.

QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION
- University degree in a related field or Community College diploma in Medical Laboratory Science, along with either a clinical, computer, or equivalent relevant experience.
- Certification for POCT Specialist through American Association for Clinical Chemists, or equivalent program preferred.
EXPERIENCE
- Minimum five (5) years recent laboratory experience in Computerized Health Care Information Systems (preferably Meditech).
- Recent POCT related responsibilities and LIS knowledge an asset.
- Knowledge of the theory and practice of laboratory concepts, procedures, instruments, equipment and special techniques within department and external to the department.
- Project Management experience and problem-solving skills an asset.
- Experience supporting end users from an applications and device standpoint.
- Background in teaching and training at the adult level.
- Related experience in a hospital environment.
PROFESSIONAL AFFILIATION:
- Active CMLTO registration required – in good standing preferred.

Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre, located in Barrie, Ontario, provides safe, high-quality care for residents across a large geographical region including Simcoe County and the District of Muskoka. The area is home to more than 450,000 residents, with half of RVH’s patients living outside the City of Barrie.
As the largest health centre in North Simcoe Muskoka, RVH provides highly specialized services, and technology not found anywhere else in the region. This includes the only interventional radiology suites for minimally invasive surgeries, vascular services, advanced stroke care, as well as dedicated trauma rooms in its large Emergency department.
