About the role

Our organization:

The Alberta Securities Commission (ASC) is the industry-funded regulator responsible for administering the province's securities and derivatives laws. It is entrusted with fostering a fair and efficient capital market in Alberta and with protecting investors. As a member of the Canadian Securities Administrators (CSA), the ASC works to improve, coordinate and harmonize the regulation of Canada's capital markets.

The Information Technology (IT) team is responsible for making sure that the ASC has the appropriate resources necessary to ensure the consistent, reliable and secure delivery of services, and understanding and anticipating the organization’s unique technology requirements.

The opportunity:

Reporting to the Manager of Information Technology, the Cloud and Infrastructure Architect will be responsible for developing and implementing the strategies, principles, and roadmaps necessary for an integrated, holistic system of cloud and on-premise infrastructure, in alignment with the ASC’s strategic plan. The architect will ensure everything from cloud platforms to physical infrastructure is designed in a way so that it works seamlessly, is secure, scalable, resilient, adaptable, and future-proof. Initially, the role will focus on the ASC’s primarily internally hosted infrastructure, as well as the design of the cloud architecture but will then refocus on supporting the migration to the cloud architecture as ASC transitions, primarily, to Azure.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Utilizing the arsenal of architecture tools to plan, design, and implement a strategy to migrate workload from operational, data centre infrastructure to Azure cloud services.
  • Creating a flexible architecture that can evolve, expand and enable enterprise agility, using the current state as a staring point, in collaboration with external experts.
  • Incorporating on-premise infrastructure and cloud in a single architecture.
  • Conducting research on emerging cloud technologies within Azure that will increase cost effectiveness and infrastructure flexibility.
  • Advising management on how to develop and mature architecture, in alignment with the strategic adoption of cloud services.
  • Monitoring the evolving cloud landscape to adapt the ASC’s cloud architecture to changes.
  • Creating architectures that can scale seamlessly to accommodate growth and fluctuating workloads, with redundancy, fault tolerance, and high availability to minimize downtime and ensure continuous service delivery.
  • Creating detailed plans for migrating applications, data, and infrastructure from on-premises environments to the cloud, considering factors like workload dependencies, data sensitivity, and business priorities.
  • Producing deliverables including roadmaps and deployment models that define and describe the goals the ASC is trying to achieve and the processes needed to achieve those goals.
  • Working with stakeholders to set the direction, approach and standards for information technology usage as the ASC migrates to the cloud, to align cloud solutions with business goals.
  • Integrating security into every aspect of the architecture, including identity and access management (IAM), encryption, network security, and compliance controls.
  • Designing reusable systems or tools (frameworks) that are tailored to the underlying infrastructure.
  • Developing, documenting, communicating, and enforcing a cloud technology standards policy.
  • Establishing deliverables including roadmaps, scorecards and models that define and describe the goals the ASC is trying to achieve and the processes needed to achieve those goals.
  • Participating in key project design reviews and procurement/outsourcing plans to ensure solution designs adhere to enterprise architecture guidelines and standards.
  • Developing and executing test plans to valid infrastructure and systems technical performance and changes as needed.
  • Monitoring the evolving cloud landscape to adapt the ASC’s cloud architecture to changes.
  • Leveraging Infrastructure as Code (IaC) using tools such as Terraform, Ansible, and Azure DevOps Pipelines, allowing automated deployments and version-controlled infrastructure.
  • Monitoring performance, troubleshooting issues, and ensuring uptime.
  • Leading efforts to transition from primarily physical, on-premise infrastructure to cloud.

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Management Information Systems (MIS) or a related field is required.
  • A minimum of ten years of experience delivering IT services with three of those years in an operations focused IT architecture role, which could include cloud, infrastructure, security and/or network architecture experience.
  • The following certification is preferred:
    • Microsoft Certified: Azure Solutions Architect Expert.
  • The following certifications are considered an asset:
    • Google Professional Cloud Architect
    • Certified Kubernetes Administrator (CKA)
  • Knowledge of IaC platforms such as Terraform, ARM, Ansible and AWS CloudFormation
  • Cloud platform expertise, in particular, Microsoft Azure.
  • The ability to design scalable and resilient systems.
  • Experience with cloud migration and cost optimization.
  • Familiarity with containerization - Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS).
  • Strong written, verbal and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Awareness of the latest technology in this field and able to leverage its capabilities
