About the role
Acknowledging that UPEI is located on the unceded land of the Mi’kmaq Nation, of the Wabanaki Confederacy, in the traditional district of Epekwitk, theEnvironmental Studies Programin the Faculty of Science at the University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI) welcomes applications from exceptional candidates for atenure-track faculty appointment at the Assistant Professor level.
Environmental issues typically do not respect traditional academic boundaries; instead, they are best addressed through a combination of scientific, technical, and social perspectives. As an interdisciplinary science and liberal arts program, the Bachelor of Environmental Studies at UPEI provides students with the opportunity to integrate knowledge across academic fields and analyze current environmental concerns. In the classroom, field, and community, students are challenged to lead the way in finding innovative solutions and make a positive impact toward sustainability across geographic and temporal scales.
The anticipated start date of this appointment isAugust 1, 2026, or a mutually agreed-upon date. Appointment rank, step, and salary are commensurate with credentials and experience, and subject to final budgetary approval.
The successful candidate will be expected to teach undergraduate courses in the Environmental Studies program and have a commitment to experiential education. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to supervise graduate students through UPEI’s MSc and PhD programs in Environmental Sciences. The successful candidate would be expected to maintain an active research program and contribute to both Faculty and University service. The successful candidate will demonstrate a commitment to Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) and to advancing reconciliation through higher education.
Qualifications:
Successful candidates must have completed a doctoral degree in Environmental Studies/Sciences or a closely related discipline, and demonstrate a strong interdisciplinary profile grounded in environmental science, with applied research in areas such as biodiversity conservation, environmental management (e.g., agriculture, forests, or watersheds, etc.) or related fields, while connecting this scientific expertise to environmental governance, policy innovation, and social-economic dimensions. Candidates with a demonstrated ability to integrate ecological knowledge with social science approaches and to contribute to interdisciplinary program development are especially encouraged to apply. We seek applicants who can expand the Program’s capacity in experiential learning, particularly in community-engaged contexts. Experience building collaborations across the campus and beyond will be considered an asset.
