About us

F ounded in 1960, the Youth Services Bureau of Ottawa (YSB) is one of the largest and most comprehensive non-profit agencies in Ottawa and a registered charity. It provides mental health services, employment programs, emergency shelter, community, health and housing services, and justice programs to youth in the Ottawa area, serving between 2,500 and 3,000 at‑risk individuals aged 12+ and their families every month. YSB employs 400 caring professionals in a unionized environment in over 22 locations across Ottawa.

An opportunity to work with Youth Services Bureau (YSB) Community Services Youth Engagement Team as a Spectrum Youth Engagement Worker (Adult Ally). YSB Community Services Youth Engagement supports: youth advisory committees, tenant associations, community partnerships, peer to peer information groups and community youth programs.  Spectrum is a youth led community program for 2SLGBTQ+ young people ages 16-24 with a focus on advocacy, discussion, information sessions, youth engagement best practices and program creation for Queer youth living in Ottawa. The Spectrum Youth Engagement Worker will work closely with the Youth Engagement, Drop-in and Peer Support Worker staff teams to coordinate and facilitate the weekly Spectrum Program.

What you will do:

  • The incumbent will facilitate our SPECTRUM program once per week at the Youth Services Bureau Drop-in building alongside two youth Peer Support Workers.

  • The Spectrum Youth Engagement Worker (Adult Ally) will work alongside LGBTQ2S+ youth and staff to implement meaningful programming that contributes to inclusion, building safe spaces and developing a peer group for queer and trans youth

  • Youth Services Bureau aims to foster and promote identify-affirming in-person spaces by creating workshops and activities for youth aged 16-24.

  • Facilitate meaningful engagement and collaboration with Peer Support Workers and other YSB youth leadership groups to support successful program delivery and ensure adherence to Youth Engagement principles.

  • Collect, track, and analyze program data to monitor outcomes and confirm achievement of key performance indicators (KPIs).

  • Maintain and update social media platforms and develop visually engaging marketing and promotional materials to support program visibility and outreach.

This opportunity may be right for you if you have the following:

  • Post-Secondary education in social work, community development or related field

  • Two years’ experience working with youth, preferably in a community development capacity

  • Demonstrated experience with Youth Engagement practices

  • Experience in bringing one’s own LGBTQ2S+ lived experience as a lens to work with youth considered an asset

  • Demonstrated ability to work with diverse populations

  • Demonstrated crisis intervention skills and the ability to engage clients in service

  • Demonstrated understanding of the issues and barriers faced by formerly homeless youth, including an understanding of the intersectionality of Homelessness and LGBTTQ2S+ identity.

  • Comfort working within a harm reduction service orientation

  • Knowledge of the community resources and services, including with the LGBTQ2S+ community

  • Ability to work independently, and in a dynamic, team-oriented environment;

  • Available to work shift work, days, evenings, weekends

  • Fluency in French and English are essential

  • Valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle is an asset

Additional Qualifications:

  • Successful applicants will be required to provide a clear Criminal Record Check, Vulnerable Sector Check or Broad Police check obtained within the past six (6) months, as a condition of employment with YSB.

  • To confirm language proficiency required for this position, successful candidates may be requested to undergo an oral and written assessment conducted by a third-party provider, arranged by YSB. Candidates must meet the minimum required linguistic profile before their employment start date.
