Job Profile Under the general supervision of the Caretaking Supervisor, the Caretaker is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe and sanitary environment for law enforcement personnel, staff, detainees and visitors.
The Caretaker will be proactive in identifying cleaning needs, follow well outlined tasks, be responsive to urgent sanitation requirements, and capable of working with minimal supervision. This is a hands-on role that involves physical labor, attention to detail, and the ability to work efficiently in a structured, secure, and occasionally high-stress environment.
The role requires following strict security protocols, being vigilant about safety and sanitation standards, and handling confidential situations appropriately.
As a Caretaker You Will
- Perform wide range of cleaning duties in both public and restricted areas of police facilities, including offices, restrooms and parking garages.
- Perform daily or incident-specific cleaning involving blood, bodily fluids, vomit, or other biohazardous materials in holding cells, vehicles, interview rooms, or public areas.
- Perform general building maintenance duties.
- Other duties as assigned
Your Education And Qualifications Include
- High School Diploma or equivalent Certification.
- Previous janitorial experience is an asset.
- Knowledge of cleaning methods, chemicals and supplies.
- Knowledge of the occupational hazards, safety precautions and regulations applicable to the position.
- Ability to safely operate and maneuver equipment, use manual and power tools.
- Ability to read and follow instructions, labels and safety data sheets (SDS).
- Good communication skills, both written and verbal with the ability to communicate clearly and accurately over hand held radio.
- Ability to work independently and manage time effectively, organize and complete tasks within a set timeframe.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and give specific attention to detail.
- Ability to handle unexpected situations and find solutions.
- Ability to work under pressure and in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to work around confidential materials with discretion, confidentiality and professionalism.
- The ability to establish and maintain a positive, respectful, safe and healthy work environment that supports the physical, psychological and social working relationships with members at all levels in a team environment.
- IMPORTANT: Applicants who have been educated outside of Canada must have education which is comparable to the minimum qualification in Canada. Minimum Requirements
- Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident
- Minimum 18 years of age
- No involvement in any criminal activity within the last two years (including illegal drugs)
- No criminal record for which a Pardon has not been granted
Conditions Of Employment
- Ability to pass a level 3 Winnipeg Police Service security check and maintain clearance
- Must be able to work 10-hour shifts including days and evenings including weekends and holidays
- Possess and maintain a valid Class 5.0 Driver’s License
- Must successfully complete pre-employment physical abilities assessment
- Ability to lift, push/pull up to 50 lbs. and stand/walk for extended periods
- Exposure to cleaning agents, bodily fluids (with proper protection), and potentially distressing environments
- Must adhere to all safety protocols and procedures
- Ability to successfully complete additional training as defined by the Service
