Purpose: Responsible for verifying relevant data on requisitions, specimens, requests from physicians and correcting errors before distributing specimens to other departments. Specimens that cannot be tested in the HSN Lab are prepared and shipped to referral laboratories in accordance with the Transportation of Dangerous Goods regulations.
Education and Training:
-
Graduate of a recognized Medical Laboratory Technician/ Assistant program with a minimum of 650-hour training program that includes at least 150 hours of clinical placement.
-
Certification with Medical Laboratory Professionals’ Association of Ontario (MLPAO) as a Medical Laboratory Technician or equivalent certification.
-
Certified to perform phlebotomy as a delegated controlled act.
-
Certified in Transportation of Dangerous Goods preferred.
Experience:
-
Minimum 1 year of recent relevant experience in a central receiving department or equivalent.
-
Recent phlebotomy experience preferred.
Knowledge/Skills/Ability:
-
Demonstrated skills in the technique and clinical application of various laboratory procedures applicable within the scope of specimen procurement and specimen preparation for clinical testing.

Demonstrated excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the proven ability to communicate effectively with patients, physicians and other health care professionals.
-
Demonstrated working knowledge of Microsoft Office software, i.e. Excel, Word and Outlook.
-
Demonstrated proficiency in data entry and working knowledge of computerized patient information systems (Meditech).
-
Demonstrated theoretical knowledge of procedures necessary for the acceptance and preparation of specimens in the laboratory departments of Cytology, Histology, Microbiology, Chemistry, Hematology and/or Genomics.

Demonstrated knowledge in the acceptance, rejection and procurement of various types of blood samples and non-blood samples.
Personal Suitability:

Proven ability to work independently and as a team player.
-
Excellent organizational skills and multi- tasking capability.
-
Current WHMIS certification & Mask Fit.
-
Demonstrated positive work record and good attendance record.
