Why Being Independent Feels Empowering, and Exhausting
About the role

Independence is one of those things every young woman is taught to strive for. “Be strong.” “Stand on your own feet.” “Don’t depend on anyone.”
And honestly? Those words shaped so much of who I became.
But here’s what no one tells you: independence is empowering, but it can also be exhausting in ways you don’t expect.
Growing up, I watched the women around me hold everything together silently. Mothers who never complained. Sisters who carried emotional weight like it was normal. Women who woke up early, worked hard, cared for everyone, and still apologized for not doing enough.
So naturally, I thought independence meant never asking for help, never showing weakness, and always managing everything on my own.
Then life happened, moving abroad, working while studying, paying bills, handling emergencies, adjusting to a new culture, and I realized something important: being independent doesn’t mean carrying the world alone. It means knowing you can, but choosing to build support around you too.

The Empowering Part
There’s nothing like the pride that comes from doing things on your own.
Signing your own lease. Paying your own tuition. Balancing work and school. Making decisions for your future.
Those moments feel like tiny victories that remind you how capable you are.
Independence Gives You
Confidence: You start trusting your own judgment more. Freedom: You define your path instead of following someone else’s blueprint. Growth: Every challenge teaches you something you never knew you could handle.
Especially for women, independence is a type of power that generations before us weren’t always allowed to experience.
We are the daughters and granddaughters of women who sacrificed so much so we could choose our careers, our countries, and our dreams.

And because of them, we get to build lives that look completely different, and hopefully, a little freer.
The Exhausting Part No One Talks About
But independence also has a hidden emotional tax.
You make every decision alone.
You solve every problem alone.
You push through stress, deadlines, financial pressure, and overwhelm alone.
Sometimes, being strong becomes the only identity you’re allowed to have.
People assume you’re fine because “you always manage.”
You stop telling others when things are hard because you don’t want to burden them.
You don’t ask for help because you fear it makes you look weak.
And that leads to burnout, the quiet kind that slowly builds until it becomes heavy in your chest.

Being independent teaches you resilience, yes.
But it also forces you to confront emotions like loneliness, self-doubt, and fatigue that you never expected to feel so deeply.
Women Carry a Different Kind of Weight
As Women, Independence Also Comes With Unspoken Expectations
Be strong, but also soft.
Be independent, but not “too much.”
Build a successful career without neglecting your relationships. Take care of yourself, but also be there for everyone else.
It’s a constant balancing act, and sometimes it feels like trying to fill everyone’s cup when your own is running empty.
What I’m Learning Now

I’m learning that independence isn’t just about doing everything alone.
It’s About
Setting boundaries. Asking for help without guilt. Letting yourself rest. Leaning on the people who genuinely care. Celebrating how far you’ve come.
And most importantly, realizing that you don’t need to prove your strength every single day.
Independence is powerful, but partnership, community, and vulnerability are powerful too.
You’re allowed to be both strong and tired, both capable and overwhelmed.
You’re allowed to be a work in progress.
