About the role

Department Information

The mandate of the Department of Justice is to administer justice, including policing, community justice, victims services and corrections in the Northwest Territories. This mandate will be carried out in a manner which respects community and indigenous values and encourages communities to assume increasing responsibilities.

Job Information

Located in Yellowknife and reporting to the Court Administration Services Manager, as the Court Finance Officer, you will play a vital role in providing statutory, financial, and administrative services to the Territorial Court, Supreme Court, Court of Appeal, and the Sheriff's Office. This position is responsible for processing fines and fees totaling approximately $500,000 annually, and managing inquiries and documentation across multiple court levels.

You will interact regularly with the public, legal professionals, RCMP, By-Law officers, judiciary, Department of Infrastructure, Probation, and Community workers. You will also maintain and safeguard the Sheriff's and NWT Courts Trust Accounts, and two Imprest Accounts totaling over $1 million annually.

Statutory Appointments:

  • Deputy Clerk of the Supreme Court
  • Deputy Clerk of the Territorial Court
  • Deputy Sheriff

Key Responsibilities:

  • Process and reconcile financial transactions and court-related fees
  • Interpret and apply Rules of Court and relevant legislation
  • Maintain accurate financial records and documentation
  • Respond to complex financial inquiries from diverse stakeholders
  • Ensure compliance with financial directives, policies, and procedures
  • Prevent errors that could result in financial or human impact

Key Qualifications:

  • Accounting Diploma with two years of experience in an accounting environment that includes at least one year completing ledger work and reconciling accounts, interpreting financial and administrative procedures, legislation and acts, and researching and responding to a variety of complex financial inquiries from a variety of clients.

Acceptable Equivalencies:

  • Accounting Certificate from an accredited institution with 3 years of experience in an accounting environment, including:
  • At least 1 year of ledger work and account reconciliation.
  • Experience interpreting financial procedures, legislation, and responding to complex inquiries.
