Description Acknowledging that starting a career as a clinician scientist has become increasingly challenging given limited opportunities, the Hold’em for Life Early Career Professorship in Cancer Research is designed to help launch the careers of early‑stage researchers and provide them with essential initial support.

The Office of the Vice Dean, Research and Health Science Education, together with the Office of Academic HR, at the Temerty Faculty of Medicine, is committed to supporting early‑career clinician scientists as a top priority. We are pleased to announce additional funding for at least one Hold’em for Life Early Career Professorship in Cancer Research, which provides resources to advance the research activity and career development of new clinician scientists, clinician investigators, and quality & innovation clinicians (within the first five years of their academic appointment), with the goal of enhancing innovation in academic medicine.

This professorship is valued at $225,000 ($75,000 per year for three years) and will be awarded to a clinical faculty member focused on any aspect of cancer research who holds a full‑time academic appointment in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine.

This early career professorship is made possible through the generous support of Hold’em for Life. Founded in 2006, Hold’em for Life is an entirely volunteer‑run nonprofit organization dedicated to raising funds for cancer research. In 2019, the organization made a transformative gift to support cancer research and education, establishing the Hold’em for Life Oncology Fellowships at the University of Toronto’s Temerty Faculty of Medicine and its partner hospitals. Since then, 138 fellowships have been awarded to clinician‑scientist trainees. Hold’em for Life continues to invest in the clinician‑scientist talent pipeline by supporting faculty early in their independent careers. To date, 18 clinical faculty members have been awarded the Hold’em for Life Early Career Professorship in Cancer Research .

The Temerty Faculty of Medicine is strongly committed to diversity within its community and especially welcomes awards applications from racialized persons/persons of colour, women, Indigenous/Aboriginal People of North America, persons with disabilities, LGBTQ2S+ persons, and others who may contribute to the further diversification of ideas.

Purpose To support the career trajectory and research activities of early‑career clinician scientists by protecting dedicated research time and providing resources that enable their success in academic medicine, specifically in the area of cancer research.

Value and Duration The professorship is valued at $225,000 over a three-year (3-year) term ($75,000 per annum) effective July 1, 2026. At least one professorship will be available for the July 1, 2026 start date.
