Position Overview:
The Product Developer, Technical Outerwear is the lead co-creation partner with Design, responsible for translating design vision into innovative, luxury, high-performance outerwear that embodies creativity, craftsmanship, and technical excellence. This role is entrusted with full ownership of driving, influencing, and managing complex development processes—from initial concept through prototyping and commercialization—while ensuring meticulous attention to luxury execution, functionality, and superior quality.
Success in this role requires strong technical acumen, material and construction expertise, and seamless cross-functional collaboration to deliver exceptional products that meet design, performance, and strategic business goals.
This role will mainly be out of the 100 Queens Quay East office.
About The Role:
- Drive, manage, and influence the end-to-end development of technical outerwear styles from concept to commercialization, with a deep focus on material performance, innovative construction techniques, and functional integrity.
- Act as a co-creation partner with Design and subject matter expert to bring creative vision to life, ensuring alignment between aesthetic, function, and commercial viability.
- Apply deep material knowledge to support fabric development, garment wash processes, and finishing details—ensuring desired hand feel, drape, performance, and luxury quality.
- Oversee prototype creation, ensuring samples reflect design intent, adhere to brand standards, and meet calendar milestones. Incorporating innovation such as 3D and AI when applicable.
- In partnership with MD and RM Sourcing, responsible for managing proto yardage ordering process and communication to vendors to ensure delivery of prototypes on time.
- Lead and participate in fit sessions, style and proto reviews; communicate construction and fit requirements clearly across cross-functional teams and vendors.
- Utilize technical knowledge of baffle construction, dpsi, fill weight optimization for thermal performance, balance, and garment structure for heavy and light weight down styles.
- Integrate advanced technical knowledge of materials, seam engineering, and construction methods—such as fully seam-sealed, taped, bonded, welded, and laser-cut technologies.
- Apply in-depth knowledge of performance outerwear materials— down proof, waterproof/breathable laminates, coated shells, soft shells, and stretch woven fabrics, etc—and understand their application for water resistance, wind proofing, durability, functionality and comfort.
- Drive the development and maintenance of accurate tech packs and Bill of Materials (BOMs) to support efficient and precise production as well as material ordering.
- Partner with Merchandising, Design, and Sourcing to achieve cost targets without compromising quality or design integrity.
- Participate in cost engineering and margin optimization exercise in collaboration with Sourcing and Finance.
- Manage product development calendars, proactively communicating risk assessments and milestones to ensure deadlines are met. Offer solutions to help achieve calendar milestones as needed.
- Support Quality Assurance and Production teams to resolve issues quickly and maintain product excellence from prototype through to final production.
- Champion innovation and continuous improvement through materials research, process refinement, and adoption of digital tools such as 3D development platforms when applicable.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of industry trends, innovations in technical outerwear, sustainable performance materials, and evolving consumer expectations.
- Ensure alignment with other product developers across categories to maintain consistency in process, standards, and best practices.
- Partner with internal teams such as Product Education and Merchandising to ensure accurate product communication to Wholesale, Brand Ambassadors, and ECOMM.
About You:
- 5+ years of experience in a technical outerwear development role, with hands-on experience in performance materials, insulation systems, and outerwear construction.
- Degree or diploma in Fashion Design, Product Development, Industrial Design, or a related technical field.
- Specialized training or certifications in textile science, performance apparel construction, or outdoor product development are considered assets.
- Expertise in outerwear construction, including down proof, water proof, wind resistance technologies and techniques.
- Extensive material knowledge in performance fabrics and finishes and how they affect fit, drape and functionality.
- Proficient in evaluating and specifying insulation types (down, synthetic, blends), their impact on garment volume, packability, warmth-to-weight ratio, and performance under use conditions.
- Proficiency in PLM systems, Microsoft Office, and Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator and Photoshop); 3D/AI platforms a plus.
- Skilled in analyzing and managing product costs, yields, and material usage.
- Exceptional communication and collaboration skills, adept at working across global, cross-functional teams.
- Highly organized and detail-oriented, with strong time management skills to navigate complex development timelines.
- A proactive, solutions-oriented thinker committed to innovation, product excellence, and continuous improvement.
- Experience leading or mentoring team members is a strong asset.
