About the role

C-FER has an immediate opening for a full-time entry- or intermediate-level Instrumentation, Mechanical or Materials Technologist reporting to the Lab Operations Technical Leader and/or Lead Technical Specialist in our Testing Division. The successful candidate will support a team of engineers and technologists who work with Canadian and International operators to develop and evaluate novel technologies for the most challenging non-standard engineering applications. The successful candidate will be expected to safely assist in setting up, commissioning, and performing full-scale destructive testing of complex experiments.

This position will be primarily based in C-FER’s East Edmonton location (3712 Roper Road), although travel to C-FER’s Main Edmonton location (200 Karl Clark Road) is also often required. The successful candidate will typically be working indoors during normal business hours (from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.); however, there may be an occasional requirement to perform overtime, shift work or field work, depending on project needs.

Duties and Responsibilities: Assists the team in the set up and execution of diverse and complex custom laboratory tests. Completes the safe planning, set up, commissioning, and execution of various full-scale destructive tests, including specimen preparation, data acquisition system set up, and general assembly activities. Installs and verifies test instruments and devices needed for data acquisition. Reviews and creates test fixture, test assembly and P&ID drawings. Troubleshoots process and equipment-related problems. Summarizes test results and observations and contributes to technical reports. Operates and performs maintenance on sophisticated test equipment. Maintains a safe and clean work area.

The ideal candidate will have the following qualifications and attributes: Successful completion of a Technical Diploma or Certificate program in Instrumentation, Mechanical or Materials Engineering Technology. Eligible for registration with ASET. Experience in an engineering laboratory/research facility, or industrial setting related to the energy/pipeline industries (or similar) would be considered an asset, but new or recent graduates will be considered. Experience with and interest in hands-on testing work with structural, mechanical, and hydraulic systems. Experience with hand tools and power tools. Familiarity with fabrication, instrumentation, measurement and control, metrology, data acquisition, mechanical assembly, and piping/fluid handling systems. Familiarity with servo-controlled hydraulic equipment. Familiarity and willingness to operate a forklift, crane, and similar equipment (training will be provided; however, experience would be considered an asset). Strong commitment to following safety policies, guidelines and best practices, including the use of required personal protective equipment (PPE), such as hard hats and respiratory protection. Strong work ethic and self-motivation. Superior technical problem-solving skills and troubleshooting ability. Excellent interpersonal skills, with a positive attitude. Excellent oral and written English communication skills. Comfortable with and able to lift weight up to 50 lbs. Ability to work on-site daily (ie, no remote or hybrid work). Ability to occasionally work shift work (including evenings and weekends), field work, and/or to be available on-call during prolonged test programs. Ability to legally work in Canada, and for C-FER Technologies.
