Reporting to the Power Systems Coordinator, the Power Systems Working Foreman Leadhand will be responsible for leading daily Power Systems maintenance and repairs in Light Rail Transit (LRT) substations, Overhead Catenary Systems (OCS), Distribution Network (DIS), and maintenance facilities (MSF). This position will also provide day-to-day direction activities to Power Systems staff. Primary duties include:

  • Oversee the maintenance of the power system equipment, plan and schedule outages, provide guidance, create and execute switching orders, provide guarantee of isolation (GOI), and perform electrical and function testing, communication testing, SCADA status, and control testing.
  • Create and fill out maintenance and test reports. Inform management of any immediate and long-term maintenance issues.
  • Respond to LRT callouts related to the Power System.
  • Work with Calgary Transit (CT) Operations Teams, and Electric Utility Company Teams to isolate Power System under emergency conditions and communicate status of outages.
  • Assess the cause of the trouble callout and determine if the system can be returned to service or if repair is required.
  • Perform any repairs needed to safely return the system to normal operation.
  • Support and coordinate with other Power System Crews during outages.
  • Safely return the Power System to the LRT System allowing CT to return to normal operations.
  • Lead and perform safety tailboards prior to starting work on site.
  • Plan maintenance tasks, trouble call responses, and special projects to be completed on a daily and weekly basis for the crew.
  • Create and record maintenance activities and trouble responses.
  • Train and provide direction to Power Systems staff including safety of onsite crew.
  • Coordinate crew activities with CT Operations Teams, Electric Utility Company Teams, CT Engineering Teams, Contractors, Consultants, outside parties, or other departments. Coordinate efforts with external parties including escorting these parties.

Qualifications

  • A Journeyperson Power System Electrician (PSE) or Journeyperson Power Line Technician (PLT).
  • At least 5 years of experience as a:
    • PSE and/or Technologist with a preference in traction power substations; OR
    • PSE and/or Technologist in a utility substation operation and maintenance; OR
    • PLT with a preference in LRT catenary operation, maintenance, or construction; OR
    • PLT in utility overhead lines operation, maintenance, or construction.
  • A valid Class 5 Driver's License (or provincial equivalency) with no more than 6 demerits OR a Class 5 Graduated Driver's License (GDL) with no more than 4 demerits.
  • Ability to obtain a City of Calgary operator's permit.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills as well as the ability to work well in a team while working independently.

Working Conditions: This position works in an outdoor environment in all types of weather (for example: heat, cold, snow, rain) and involves walking, lifting, and physical activity.
