About the role

The Opportunity

Our client is seeking a Director, Commercial Underwriting to lead its commercial property and casualty underwriting operations across the Prairies. Based in Calgary, this is a senior regional leadership position with responsibility for teams located in both Calgary and Edmonton. The Director will oversee two Underwriting Managers, each leading a team of approximately eight professionals, as well as an Executive Underwriter. Most of the regional team is based in Calgary. Reporting to the Vice President of Underwriting, this individual will provide leadership, coaching, and strategic direction while supporting underwriting quality, portfolio performance, employee development, and continued growth across the region.

This opportunity is well suited to an experienced commercial underwriting leader who understands complex property and casualty risks and is comfortable leading through other people managers. Experience with construction, oil and gas, or similarly complex commercial sectors would be particularly valuable.

Our client is a commercial property and casualty insurer with underwriting operations across Western Canada. The organization is seeking an experienced leader who can support a well-established regional team while contributing to broader underwriting strategy and business performance.

About You

You are an experienced commercial property and casualty underwriting professional with a strong record of direct people leadership. You are comfortable leading managers, developing underwriting talent, and maintaining high standards for underwriting quality and portfolio performance.

You bring sound commercial judgment, strong relationship-building skills, and an understanding of the Prairie insurance market. You are able to balance strategic leadership with practical involvement in complex underwriting matters and are comfortable working with senior stakeholders across multiple offices.

Necessary Qualifications Include

10+ years of commercial property and casualty underwriting experience Previous direct people leadership experience Demonstrated ability to coach, develop, and lead underwriting professionals Experience managing managers or leading through senior team members considered a strong asset Strong technical knowledge of commercial property and casualty underwriting Experience with complex commercial risks Ability to provide leadership across teams located in Calgary and Edmonton Strong communication, decision-making, and relationship-management skills Exposure to construction, oil and gas, or similar commercial sectors considered a strong asset CIP designation considered an asset Ability to travel approximately one to two times per quarter
