About the role

Senior Research Assistants are normally graduate students, or University of Winnipeg undergraduate students, employed to assist in the execution and evaluation of research projects in their area of study. The positions may oversee Research Assistants in areas such as the use of proper techniques, analysis, and documentation.

Senior Research Assistants work under the general supervision or direction of more senior researchers or faculty members, and are expected to exercise judgment in prioritizing, planning and organizing their own work within defined parameters.

Position Overview:

The Research Assistant will support the PI by compiling academic literature, writing literature reviews, conducing searches of news and social media, coding and qualitatively analyzing visual crime media, and writing up findings.

Duties:

  • Prepare equipment and materials for research.
    • locate appropriate DVD and streaming resources for research.
  • Perform academic research, standard tests and experiments.
    • Code, and carry out qualitative content analysis of visual and written texts.
  • Monitor and document research status and findings.
    • Document and compile findings in tabular form, and write periodic summaries of findings.
  • Assist with duties related to the production of articles, publications, reports and presentations.
    • Compile literature, and carry out literature review, and assist with compiling written materials.
  • Prepare literature reviews.
    • Compile literature, and carry out literature review.
  • Assist in data collection, data entry, analysis and interpretation.
    • Code data, analyze data qualitatively, and assist PI with interpretation of findings through regular meetings and progress reports.
  • Assist in the acquisition of research materials and supplies.
    • Help locate and secure DVD and streaming resources for analysis.
  • Perform data/word processing, routine computations, record keeping, and routine clerical and administrative duties to support research activities.
    • As required related to other tasks as specified.
  • Assist in the execution and evaluation of research projects, including literature reviews, surveys, focus groups, data integration and analysis, and assist in preparing articles, publications, reports and presentations
    • Compile literature, and carry out literature review, and assist with compiling written materials.
  • Prepare materials for submission to research funding agencies and foundations.
    • Assist PI with preparation of materials in support of grants and funding opportunities as needed.
  • Assist in seeking publication opportunities for the research team.
    • Assist with identifying potential knowledge mobilization opportunities related to the project aims and assist with application, presentation and preparation of manuscripts.
  • Perform other duties as required or assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Graduate degree in Criminology, Legal Studies, Criminal Justice or related field.
  • Qualitative methods of analysis.
  • Experienced in analysis of visual media including TV and film.
  • Strong verbal and written communications skills.
  • Experience with scholarly publishing.
  • Experience presenting to scholarly audiences.

Condition(s) of Employment:

  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.

The period of work will be from February 15, 2026 - December 31, 2027, and the estimated total hours of work will be 0-200 hours.
