About the role
About Us Based in Montreal, Quebec, Simply Voting Inc. is a leading provider of secure, hosted online elections. Our clients include prominent organizations such as Elections PEI, the Liberal Party of Canada, and the University of Toronto. Known for our innovative voting systems and outstanding customer service, we are a financially stable, growing company with a professional yet welcoming work environment.
About The Role This position is the perfect opportunity for someone who is looking for a stable, full-time career developing complex, mission-critical software that has a direct impact on democracy in various sectors of our society. Your time will mostly be spent programming and testing various back-end enhancements to the voting system and related software infrastructure. A smaller portion of your time (25%) will be spent on front-end user interface enhancements. Due to the nature of the software and industry, testing is critical and it is common to spend much more time testing your code than writing it. You will be given proper training to understand the industry and how our voting system works. Our technology stack currently includes CentOS, MariaDB 10.6, Symfony 7, PHP 8, HTML5, jQuery, and Tailwind CSS.
Qualifications Candidates should have at least 2 years of experience developing in a team environment, with a proven track record of working on complex, customer-facing software products. Mastery of PHP is essential, along with excellent full-stack knowledge including PHP, MySQL, HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. A strong understanding of the Symfony framework and Object-Oriented Programming (OOP) principles is required. Familiarity with Git for version control, designing and writing unit tests, and working within a Linux environment are also necessary. The ideal candidate possesses a strong desire to learn, excellent problem-solving skills, and effective communication abilities. You should have a dedicated home office setup with high-speed internet if working remotely, along with self-motivation and discipline to work productively from home. Creativity, a positive attitude, adaptability, and a strong work ethic are highly valued traits.
Responsibilities You will develop a comprehensive understanding of online voting processes and our business operations. This includes gaining in-depth knowledge of the functionality and programming of our voting system. You will utilize Git/GitHub for version control and project coordination, programming enhancements based on high-level specifications, and developing, documenting, and executing testing plans for each enhancement. Reviewing source code changes and testing enhancements during peer reviews is a key part of the role. Additionally, you will investigate application errors, perform load testing, and conduct static source code analysis. Occasionally, you may be involved in non-programming tasks such as research, brainstorming, or special projects. Providing technical assistance to team members, such as running database queries or reviewing source code, and participating actively in team meetings are also important responsibilities.
Benefits Our company offers a flexible work environment with 85% of work conducted remotely, promoting an excellent work/life balance. Employees benefit from comprehensive life, health, and dental plans, ensuring well-being and security. We also provide an annual company-wide bonus and RRSP matching to support your financial growth. Our paid vacation policy includes four weeks of leave annually, allowing ample time for rest and rejuvenation. The salary is competitive and commensurate with experience, recognizing your skills and contributions. We are committed to fostering a supportive and engaging workplace where employees can thrive and grow professionally.
