Nature & Scope
YMCA Camp Kanannaq is located on Nadsilnich (West) Lake, a 20 minutes drive from Prince George, BC. It is situated on 200 acres of beautiful forested lakefront property. We have a beautiful waterfront where campers spend part of each day swimming or boating, and many forested program spaces for activities such as archery, fire-building, and orienteering. During July and August, Camp Kanannaq offers day camp programs for youth ages 5-17, with one week camps for youth ages 5-15, and two and three week leadership development programs. In the spring and fall, Camp Kanannaq offers day and overnight Outdoor Education programs.
Camp Kanannaq operates as a day camp, and does not offer accommodation to staff during regular programming. Our limited indoor spaces and facilities provide a rustic setting for those who enjoy working outside. Camp Kanannaq employs 15-20 staff during the summer, with a smaller team of about 3-5 during Outdoor Education seasons. Successful Camp Kanannaq staff are self-motivated individuals whose ambition is to help children and youth develop in an outdoor camp setting, who are ready to work hard outdoors in all conditions, and who believe in 5-star customer service for all participants.
YMCA Camp Kanannaq is seeking an individual to fill the role of Youth Program Leader
The Youth Program Leader is responsible for delivering and facilitating the LD1, LD2, and Teen Camp Programs for 13-17 year-old campers. Most of the time they work independently from the rest of the counselor and program team, however they may work cooperatively with other members of the staff team to develop and deliver their program, which builds leadership abilities, group development among participants, technical skills, and instruction skills.
In LD1, campers focus on learning how to lead activities, team building, and supporting others. In LD2, campers take on more responsibility; exploring different styles of leadership, helping staff facilitate activities and working with younger campers. The Teen Camp Program allows youth to attend camp and experience the classic camp activities with programming catered to their age group.
Previous camp experience is essential for this staff member, as is a high level of core camp skills, teaching, and group work. The Youth Programs Leader may also be asked to provide support to counselors and other program staff as needed to enhance the overall camp experience and ensure a safe, supportive environment for all campers.
Major Responsibilities**-in this position, you will:**
- Plan and deliver experiential and educational leadership programming. Facilitate Camp Kanannaq’s core programs such as canoeing, archery, art, etc. and be able to adapt programming to suit the outcomes.
- Work with the Assistant Coordinator; Water and Youth Programs to ensure programming is creative, authentic, and age appropriate. Seek help from the Assistant Coordinator when necessary
- Establish and maintain positive communication with all parents/guardians
- Lead and facilitate all activities and workshops for the youth ages 13-17
- Manage group dynamics and behaviour of the group to ensure the emotional and physical safety of all campers. Ensure that all campers feel supported, safe, and all of their needs are being met.
- Prioritize the experience of all Leadership Development participants
- Maintain regular attendance, punctuality and be appropriately prepared for all activities in all weather conditions
- Share passion for camp and the outdoors, integrating and promoting positive youth development
