About the role

The Program

At Taproot Community Support Services, we’re a 100 percent employee-owned organization through an Employee Ownership Trust (EOT). Every employee is an owner from their first day, with a voice in shaping Taproot’s future and the opportunity to share in employee ownership dividends.

Intervention supports for children, youth and families having Children's Services involvement.

Using a Signs of Safety and a strengths-based approach, the program works with youth, children & families in their communities and on nearby Metis settlements (Buffalo Lake &/or Kikino) to support healthy daily living skills, conflict management, parenting, addiction, mental health, interpersonal, home management, financial skills, and other areas of support or interest as identified by youth and family. Build a support network for future growth and success, through community access to resources/programs (recreation, childcare, employment supports & job coaching, addictions support, family counselling, etc.)

In Your Role You Will

  • Travel to family homes and communities in the service area
  • Provide flexible and responsive support to address children, youth, family or caregiver needs.
  • Oversee and manage service plan goals and objectives.
  • Provide care though individual program plans while respecting choices, decisions and needs of families.
  • Establish trusting relationships with families to assist them toward development of interpersonal communication skills, daily living skills, and other areas of interest.
  • Accommodate and respect cultural, social and religious heritage.
  • Collaborate and/or work as team with community systems (i.e. school), specialized service providers, volunteers and extended family members.
  • Conduct family visits in the community and is available for evening/weekend visits and/or on standby as required.
  • Prepare and submit reports as per specifications and deadlines.
  • Adhere to protocols that relate to abuse and appropriately reports safety concerns.
  • Advocate minimizing risks and promote opportunities to maximize and/or enhance community, family and individual support networks for individuals.
  • Represent Taproot with professionalism and respect within our communities.
  • Adhere to ethical/professional standards, perform all program activities in accordance with Taproot policies and procedures as well as program specific policies, Children and Family policies, accreditation and core standards
  • Knowledge of Indigenous culture is beneficial.

The Position

The Family Support Worker works directly with families, youth, children and adults to facilitate home and community visits aimed at strengthening and preserving families. Family Support Workers convene and facilitate family care teams to provide support and ensure best outcomes.

Schedule:
One (1) permanent full-time position, working 40 hours per week:

  • Work a flexible 40 hr/wk schedule to meet the needs of families including weekend drives and supervised family visits.

Preference for qualified Indigenous (First Nations, Inuit and Metis) applicants with strong cultural ties to the community.

This position requires a reliable vehicle, as travel in and around Lac La Biche is necessary. A company vehicle may be provided.

**Qualification requirements deem this to be Family Support Worker level 2.**

Mandatory Pre-Employment Screenings and Checks

*** Prior to confirmation of employment, all applicants must provide a copy of a current Criminal Record Check and/or Government Screening Letter. These checks vary depending on province and sector and will be communicated by the Program Hiring Team.

As An Ideal Candidate You Possess

  • 2+ years’ experience working with families.
  • Student currently enrolled in a Diploma or Degree program in Social Work, Child and Youth Care, Early Childhood or related Social Sciences or Human Service
  • Other combinations of education and experience may be considered.
  • Class 5 Alberta Driver’s License, appropriate insurance and clear Drivers Abstract (free of DUI, distracted driving, multiple speeding tickets)
  • Reliable vehicle with backseat for transporting children in care seat (supplied)
  • Computer skills - required for emailing and document preparation, as all files are electronic
  • First Aid/CPR and Suicide Intervention certificates or attend employer-provided training
  • Preference will be given to applicants of Indigenous ancestry who walk in the traditional ways of life and being with strong cultural ties to the community. Indigenous language skills are an asset.
