Matrix HR is partnering with an esteemed Energy Services Client to recruit an Estimating Lead!
This is an exceptional opportunity for a seasoned estimating professional to provide strategic leadership to a talented estimating team while overseeing the successful execution of complex industrial and civil energy services projects.
Position Summary The Estimating Lead will be responsible for overseeing the entire estimating function, ensuring the development of competitive and accurate project estimates. This role involves providing strong leadership and mentorship to the estimating team, coordinating closely with operations, project management, procurement, and clients. The successful candidate will play a key role in bid preparation, cost analysis, subcontractor/vendor coordination, risk identification, and the continuous improvement of estimating processes.
Key Responsibilities Leadership & Team Development Provide direct guidance, mentorship, and support to a multidisciplinary team of estimators. Coordinate daily workload planning and prioritization to manage high-frequency bid volumes. Promote consistency, accuracy, and adherence to company estimating procedures, tools, and templates. Support training and development initiatives for estimating staff.
Estimating & Bid Management Lead the preparation, coordination, and final submission of comprehensive project estimates and proposals. Review drawings, specifications, schedules, and bid documents to determine project scope and requirements. Develop detailed labor, equipment, material, and subcontractor cost estimates. Coordinate quantity take-offs and pricing activities. Ensure estimates are accurate, competitive, and completed within required deadlines. Identify project risks, exclusions, assumptions, and value engineering opportunities. Participate in bid reviews and management presentations.
Client & Vendor Coordination Act as a primary point of contact for existing clients regarding active bids. Solicit and evaluate subcontractor and supplier quotations. Maintain strong working relationships with vendors, subcontractors, and clients. Participate in client meetings, pre-bid meetings, and site visits as required. Clarify project requirements and resolve scope or pricing discrepancies.
Cost Analysis & Process Improvement Analyze historical cost data and market trends to improve estimate accuracy. Assist with budgeting, forecasting, and project cost benchmarking. Prepare bid summaries, comparison sheets, and management reports. Contribute to the development and improvement of estimating tools, templates, and databases. Support continuous improvement initiatives focused on efficiency and accuracy.
Qualifications Minimum of 5+ years of practical estimating experience in construction, industrial, maintenance, fabrication, or related industries, including detailed takeoffs and plan reviews. Demonstrated leadership or supervisory experience with a collaborative and supportive mindset. Proficiency with estimating software (e.g., Bluebeam, Tekla, or similar) and Microsoft Office Suite. Ability to read and interpret drawings, specifications, and contract documents. Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills. Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet tight deadlines. Journeyperson trade certification, diploma, or degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Business, or a related field is considered an asset. A deep conceptual understanding of estimating processes is highly valued.
Location & Work Schedule Given the collaborative leadership nature of this role, the successful candidate is expected to work onsite at the client's Fort Saskatchewan, AB office location, Monday through Friday during regular full-time business hours. Some overtime may be required during peak bid periods to support proposal deadlines.
