About the role
Position Overview
Under the supervision of the Manager Health Services, the Health Care Aide (HCA) provides direct care to patients within the Selkirk Mental Health Centre (SMHC); assisting with activities of daily living (ADLs), supporting independence and patient goal acquisition. The HCA demonstrates commitment to the mission, vision and values of SMHC while adhering to standards of care, policies and procedures.
Experience
- Experience providing care to individuals in a mental health setting, or with physical and cognitive impairments is preferred
Education (Degree/Diploma/Certificate)
- Minimum Grade 10
- Successful completion of recognized Health Care Aide course required
Qualifications and Skills
- Demonstrates effective oral and written communication skills. Demonstrating effective command of the English language
- Knowledge of Personal Health Information Act (PHIA), Workplace Hazardous Material Information System (WHMIS), Principles of Routine Practices and other relevant Workplace Safety and Health requirements/responsibilities
- Knowledge of Indigenous customs, traditions and values is preferred
- Ability to prioritize care for an individual patient or group of patients
- Ability to respond to a variety of simultaneous demands
- Ability to perform independently and as a member of the healthcare team
- Ability to adapt quickly to changing situations
- Ability to recognize and pursue self-development opportunities
Physical Requirements
- Moderate to heavy physical effort required. Involves physical activities such as standing, transferring, and transporting patients/residents and equipment
- Requires shift work and will include evening, night or weekend shifts, or extended working hours as required
- May encounter aggressive and/or agitated individuals

This position requires a current satisfactory Criminal Records Check (including Vulnerable Sector Search), Child Abuse Registry Check and Adult Abuse Registry Check as conditions of employment.
