About the role

Highland Community Midwives are looking for a registered midwife for a temporary one year position, with strong potential to extend.

We are located in beautiful Antigonish, Nova Scotia and have our hospital births at St. Martha’s Regional Hospital. We practice out of a newly renovated clinic in the community. We provide care to clients throughout Antigonish and Guysborough counties, and many communities on Cape Breton Island. We have satellite clinics in various locations in our catchment area and serve a diverse rural population, aiming to keep care close to home for our clients.

Our Community Antigonish, the “Highland Heart of Nova Scotia”, is a small university town, close to many beautiful parks and beaches- close enough that you can enjoy them even while on call! There is a strong sense of community in the town and county, with a busy farmers market, vibrant art & music scene and plenty of family-friendly activities throughout the year. Antigonish is located approximately 2 hours away from the city of Halifax.

Our Practice Highland Community Midwives are a team of 5 midwives (currently 4 practicing), employed by Nova Scotia Health, and we practice in a shared care model. There is a midwife and backup midwife oncall together for home births/sleep relief/extra support. We strive to support a work-life balance, and aim for 7-10 days off/month. We keep a moderate caseload for the team as we cover a lot of distance doing home visits in our catchment area. RNs are our backup in hospital births. We have supportive management and strong collaborative relationships with other health care providers/staff at our hospital. As employees, we are paid hourly wages, have paid vacation and holidays, health benefits, pension, as well as oncall, evening, and weekend premiums. Ask us about signing bonuses and relocation reimbursements.

Ideal Candidate We are open to new registrants!

An ideal candidate would be a team player, have solid clinical skills, have experience working with diverse populations, be comfortable driving long distances, be interested in the rural east coast lifestyle and be keen to contribute to the midwifery growth and promotion in Nova Scotia.
