Position Summary:

Reporting to the Manager AI and Automation, the Senior AI Advisor will support institution-wide digital transformation initiatives. They will play a key role in guiding the ethical, effective, and forward-thinking use of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies across academic, research, and administrative areas. The incumbent will also be responsible for promoting the responsible adoption of AI and integrating AI capabilities into McGill’s evolving digital ecosystem.

Key Responsibilities:

  • AI Strategy & Planning:
    • Advise the Manager and Senior Director and key stakeholders on institutional AI strategy and digital innovation opportunities.
    • Identify and evaluate potential AI applications that align with McGill’s mission, focusing on operational efficiency, academic excellence, and user experience.
    • Develop roadmaps for AI adoption, balancing innovation with compliance, ethics, and sustainability.
  • Technical & Ethical Guidance:
    • Provide expertise on AI-related technologies including machine learning, natural language processing, and data analytics.
    • Serve as a subject matter expert on AI ethics, fairness, transparency, and data privacy.
    • Contribute to governance frameworks for responsible and explainable AI use at McGill.
  • Project Support & Integration:
    • Collaborate with IT, research, and administrative teams to evaluate and implement AI-driven solutions.
    • Provide consultation and review on AI components of digital transformation projects.
    • Partner with IT, Info Security and IT Governance and Risk to assess risks, ensure compliance, for alignment with institutional goals.
    • Facilitate pilot programs and AI proof-of-concepts across various departments.
  • Capacity Building & Community Engagement:
    • Promote AI literacy and understanding across the university through workshops, seminars, and advisory support.
    • Build partnerships with internal and external stakeholders to advance AI knowledge-sharing and collaboration.
    • Support workshops, training to build AI literacy among faculty, staff, and students

Qualifications:

  • At least 5 years of experience advising or working in AI, data analytics, or digital transformation roles, with a minimum of 2 years focus on delivering AI projects
  • Bachelor and advanced degree in a related field (e.g., computer science, data science, AI, digital innovation, ethics) preferred.
  • Demonstrated understanding of AI technologies, trends, and applications in enterprise or academic contexts.
  • Experience with major AI models and vendors as well as open source models (eg OpenAI, Anthropic, Cohere, Google)
  • Experience with development languages and languages AI libraries and frameworks, LLM development platforms, and cloud-based AI/ML Ops platforms such as, but not limited to, Python, Pytorch, LlmaIndex, langchain, Google vertex AI, SageMaker, Azure ML studioStrong knowledge of ethical, legal, and policy considerations related to AI.
  • Knowledge of Canadian digital and responsible AI frameworks (eg OECD AI principles, Montreal Declaration, etc.
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills.
  • Bilingualism in English and French is an asset.

Preferred Attributes:

  • Experience working in higher education or large public-sector organizations.
  • Familiarity with cloud-based AI services and platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, Google Cloud).
  • Familiarity with development tools and languages (such as but not limited to GitHub, Python, C#)
