ABOUT THE ROLE

We are looking for a passionate and caring Registered Nurse to join our Health care team! The Registered Nurse (RN) is a regulated member of the interdisciplinary health care team that provides comprehensive, quality care to patients and families in the community of Fort McKay First Nation. The RN works to their full scope of practice in providing safe, quality care in accordance with established standards, policies and procedures of FMFN. The incumbent utilizes the nursing process, critical thinking, problem solving and decision-making skills to individuals, families, groups, communities and populations across the life span in all practice settings.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide a variety of nursing services to patients including families, groups, communities, and populations within the framework of holistic professional nursing practices and the principles of primary health care.

  • Observe, assess, monitor and document patient symptoms, reactions and progress.

  • Administer medications and injections.

  • Provide education and information to patients, families, and caregivers.

  • Incorporate critical inquiry and relational practice to conduct an organized and comprehensive assessment that emphasizes patient input and the determinants of health.

  • Identifies nursing diagnosis based on defining characteristics presented and communicates nursing diagnosis to patient, interprofessional health care team members, and other providers of care as appropriate.

  • Triages and communicates with community physicians as needed.

  • Assist physicians during procedures.

  • Collaborates care with other members of the nursing team and consults with other healthcare providers as needed to meet patient, family, and community needs.

  • Coordinates and manages the ongoing administration of the patient-centered care plans.

  • Utilizes nursing process, critical inquiry, problem solving, and decision-making skills to provide care to individuals, families, groups, communities, and populations across the life span.

  • Conducts organized and comprehensive professional assessments of the patient's health status and determines appropriate responses and follow-up including consultation with the patient and other health care providers.

  • Provides collaborative and shared leadership within the interprofessional health care team.

  • Applies scope of practice as defined by Schedule 24 of the Health Professions Act of Alberta, Registered Nurses Profession Regulation and CARNA Standards of Practice and other guiding documents.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

KEY REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing is required.

  • Minimum of two (2) years of nursing experience required.

  • A current and ongoing valid practice permit from the College and Association of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CARNA) is required.

  • Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP) is required.

  • Completion of Indigenous awareness and sensitivity training is required.

  • Experience in long-term care is preferred.

  • A sound knowledge and background in home care nursing preferred.

  • Wound Care knowledge is an asset.

  • Palliative care knowledge is an asset.

  • Experience working in an Indigenous community including knowledge of First Nations culture, traditions and values is a definite asset.

The Fort McKay First Nation (FMFN) is composed of over 800 band members, including those of Cree and Dene heritage, with approximately 400 members residing in the hamlet of Fort McKay — a community located approximately 65 km north of Fort McMurray. Fort McKay offers the best of both worlds: remote northern life for the nature lover and proximity to a large city of about 70,000 people with all the amenities you need.

Fort McKay First Nation (FMFN), located along the banks of the Athabasca River in the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo north of Fort McMurray. There are approximately 800 Dene, Cree and Métis community members living in Fort McKay. The FMFN shares a border with the Fort McKay Métis Community and together we call Fort McKay home.
