###Your Opportunity:
Alberta Precision Laboratory (APL) has an exciting opportunity for an experienced in-house General Counsel to join our executive leadership team and support APL’s province wide operations. Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, you will serve as a key advisor to the executive team and the Board of Directors, providing practical guidance on legal matters, regulatory requirements, and statutory compliance. In this role, your extensive legal experience with health law, labour relations, employment matters, corporate and commercial issues, privacy and freedom of information, legal trends, risk management, and general regulatory compliance will be essential. As a trusted advisor, you will collaborate with external legal counsel, oversee corporate filings related to regulatory compliance, and support informed decision making across the organization. Your ability to manage risk, negotiate complex solutions, and communicate clearly will help ensure APL’s continued success. Strong relationship building skills will allow you to work effectively with local, provincial, and national partners, including health entities, government departments, and auditors. This position offers flexibility and can be performed remotely or hybrid within Alberta. APL is the sole provider of publicly funded laboratory services in Alberta, facilitating medical decisions across the continuum of care and playing an integral role in preventing, detecting, diagnosing, treating, and managing medical conditions. ###Description:
The General Counsel and Corporate Secretary is responsible for managing the legal affairs of APL. General Counsel provides practical recommendations and direction to the Chief Operating Officer (COO) and members of the executive team with respect to legal issues and regulatory and statutory compliance, as well as advising the Board of Directors on legal obligations and governance best practices. This role acts as the key legal advisor and provides leadership in the provision of a full range of legal services and legal and risk management expertise and practical advice. Oversees and coordinates input from other legal advisors, including those in the Government of Alberta Health ministries and Justice and Solicitor General, and external legal counsel as required for specialized expertise. Is responsible to ensure APL’s compliance with all legislative, regulatory, and applicable legal requirements.

Required Qualifications:
Possess a J.D. or LL. B and is a member in good standing with the Law Society of Alberta. Fifteen (15) years’ legal experience in an in-house legal department or law firm and familiarity with complex service delivery environments. Ten (10) years’ experience in a relevant leadership capacity and experience providing strategic legal advice to executive leadership teams and carrying out corporate secretariat functions. Experience providing expert counsel to executive leaders and Board of Directors on legal matters, including health law, labour relations and employment matters, corporate and commercial matters, privacy, legal trends, risk, and general regulatory compliance.

Preferred Qualifications:
Graduate degree (MBA, MHA). Previous healthcare experience or experience in an organization of comparable size, complexity and diversity is an asset.
