About the role
School District No. 73 (Kamloops-Thompson) is currently accepting applications for the position of Irrigation Maintenance 1.
This is a full-time, permanent position, working 10 months per year (Layoff period: January/February). Following successful completion of the probationary period, the incumbent will be eligible for Extended Health and Dental Benefits, as well as Group Life Insurance. School District No. 73 belongs to the Municipal Pension Plan.
Under the limited supervision of the Manager of Grounds, the incumbent is required to carry out a variety of skilled/semi-skilled tasks associated with the installation, repair and maintenance of irrigation systems located throughout the School District. Work is varied and requires independent judgement and initiative.
TYPICAL DUTIES:

Assists with layout and installation of new irrigation systems.

Performs warranty work for suppliers of irrigation systems including valve and head repair and automatic clock maintenance.

Maintains previously installed irrigation systems by cleaning foreign matter from heads and/or replacing heads using hand tools.

Blows lines out in the Fall and starts irrigation systems up in the Spring.

Performs all duties related to irrigation systems as directed by a senior Irrigation Maintenance employee(s).

Other assigned job related duties.

Performs labour intensive duties on a regular basis.

Required to follow all safe work procedures, participate in Occupational Health and Safety Training, and report any hazards in the workplace.

May perform duties of Equipment Operator.
ABILITIES, KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
- Ability to communicate and maintain effective working relationships with the public, students, teachers, Administrative Officers and other employees of the Board.
- Ability to perform a variety of tasks with limited supervision.
- Ability to repair and maintain irrigation systems as per dealer specifications.
- Ability to work independently.
- Working knowledge of various types of heads, time clocks and irrigation systems.
- Knowledge of or willing to take training to safely operate bobcat, man lift, mower, plow truck, chainsaw, forklift, etc.
- Knowledge of snow removal techniques.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Preferably Grade 12 supplemented by completion of training and course work in irrigation systems.
- Two years proven previous work experience in the installation, repair and maintenance of irrigation systems.
- Level 1 and 2 Certified Irrigation Technician course.
- Transportation of Dangerous Goods Certificate.
- Low Voltage Certificate
- Must be physically able to perform all duties of the position.
- Valid B.C. Class 5 Driver’s License with a Code 20 heavy trailer endorsement.
