The Business Center Practice Leader (BCPL) is the “seller/doer” who is an integral part of winning work and then leading the delivery of excellent work to our clients. The BCPL supports the growth of the BC, and Stantec’s market position while providing innovative design solutions with exceptional quality and execution that exceed client expectations.
As a leader, the BCPL inspires teams, drives practice excellence with support from our Technical Practice Leaders (TPLs), Project Managers (PMs) and Project Technical Leads (PTLs), and holds teams accountable in support of bottom-line business performance. The BCPL reports to the Regional Business Leader (RBL) and is a partner to the BC Operations Leader (BCOL) to reinforce the brand of Stantec while helping our clients, colleagues and communities thrive.
Depending on business needs, a BCPLs primary focus may shift from either serving as a seller/doer with responsibility for winning the work with the BC or focus on leading the development and deployment of our teams that deliver design and project delivery excellence.
As the prime leader within the Business Center (BC) for engineering and technical services, this position acts as the main point of contact on engineering execution and technical issues. You will lead a team of multiple-discipline engineers, technologists and technical support personnel. This position will be responsible for our oil and gas and heavy industry technical teams in Western Canada and will work closely with the mining practice leader to lead technical delivery for our business center.
Do Key Responsibilities:
- Drive while proactively identifying opportunities to reinforce and further develop Stantec’s high performance culture with a focus on talent, quality, innovation, productivity, excellence, and business performance.
- Build and develop technical delivery teams leveraging resources within the BC, Integrated Design (ID), the Global Design Center (GDC), E&R and across Stantec ensuring the right person for the right role.
- Lead or assign responsibility for technical project delivery, QAQC, discipline excellence, subject matter expertise, standardization, and best practices in the execution of work and use tools.
- Inspire, motivate, and hold the team accountable for the delivery of innovative design solutions.
- Leverage and promote strong interaction with TPLs for resource mentorship, development and project delivery.
- Lead or assign responsibility for management, needs assessment and provision of digital practice, tools and applications in support of BC to deliver work. Act as a highly regarded leader, thought partner and a source of counsel and advice for the BC.
- Represents the BC through public speaking engagements and attendance at industry and community events, meetings, and conferences.
- Build strong partnerships with business leaders in other BCs and BOUs to foster collaboration, grow new expertise, increase work share opportunities, and drive growth.
- Work with client technical representatives and quality control teams to ensure that the engineering services meet expectations.
- Ensure compliance with APEGA guidelines and other jurisdictions.
- Establish annual goals and objectives for direct reports and monitor progress.
- Provide guidance to BC Leadership on training requirements for the technical group.
- Participate in BC leadership team planning and goal setting.
- Develop and ensure consistency in inter-discipline workflows, coordination, and quality procedures.
- Lead continuous improvement efforts through lessons learned and best practices.
Win
- Work collaboratively with the WIN team to drive growth of E&R and the BC by supporting business development activities, key pursuits, and MB&D strategy.
- Engage with our SLs, RSLs, and AMs to expand the BC’s reach and client base using strong marketing, business development, and account management plans.
- Increase the visibility of Stantec, to enhance our reputation and drive revenue, by sharing our knowledge and innovation story at key client engagements.
- Actively participate in the Go/No Go review process, contribute to win strategies and successful project execution through hands-on involvement in key pursuits, client management and project management.
- Lead the annual marketing and business development (M&BD) plan for the BC and help manage the marketing spend.
Manage
- Collaborate with the BCOL in developing, attracting, engaging, and retaining top talent while supporting the overall talent management lifecycle including career development, employee engagement, succession planning, coaching and mentoring, diversity and inclusion, and leadership development for the BC.
- Establish employee connectedness to leadership by interfacing frequently with employees and by conducting BC-wide meetings to communicate the vision, business strategy and progress against applicable action plans with the BCOL.
- Support the BCOL in meeting established targets net revenue, gross margin, overhead, and operating income in the BC.
Capabilities And Credentials
- Professional Degree and registration preferred in your field of practice, as applicable. Minimum of 10+ years of experience in business development, account management and project management experience in multi-disciplinary practice.
- Demonstrated leadership on key projects and experience with delivering project excellence.
- Strong seller-doer capable of generating work and creating long-term relationships and delivering long-term value to clients for Stantec.
- Highly collaborative and driven to form partnerships with ID, GDC, and across E&R.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, organization, coordination, leadership, team-building and managerial skills.
- Knowledge of market assessment techniques, insights, and contacts.
- An entrepreneurial orientation with strong understanding of the business development challenges of a consulting-services provider.
- Experience with responding to Requests for Proposals, Expression of Interests, Statement of Qualifications.
- Experience across multiple service offerings and sectors a plus.
- Collaborative across Integrated Design, Global Delivery Center, and E&R.
- Demonstrated ability to build long-term client relationships and deliver sustained value.
- Skilled negotiator in complex situations.
