Overview

This is skilled work providing industry standards in turf care. This includes caring for turf sports fields and related maintenance, such as irrigation, fertilizing, top dressing, over seeding and aerating programs. The incumbent will be responsible for maintenance of the City’s sports fields, and artificial fields and other turf related work.

Examples of key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Grooming and maintaining the City’s artificial fields.
  • Providing regular inspections of the City’s turf areas to check for wear, damage, and general turf health.
  • Ensuring the safety of the crew and the public, and that safety precautions and procedures are observed.
  • Performing administrative work such as estimating budgets, entering time sheets, creating work schedules, maintaining departmental records, and managing IPS requests.
  • Planning, assigning, and supervising the work of unskilled and semi-skilled in various turf related work.
  • Planning form and ordering materials required for carrying out related work.
  • Installing, maintaining and repairing of sport field irrigation systems.
  • Organizing and maintaining priorities of various programs.
  • Ordering and completing programs associated with major expenditures (e.g. yearly fertilizer program).

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Sound knowledge of the principles and practices of Integrated Pest Management, and experience with natural and artificial turf and irrigation systems.
  • Considerable knowledge of safety rules, procedures and regulations governing this work.
  • Considerable knowledge of the City of Richmond’s irrigation system, including familiarity with installation, maintenance, and repair.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of effective leadership and supervisory principles and practices.
  • Sound knowledge of methods, practices, tools and equipment used in performing skilled turf maintenance work.
  • Ability to plan and participate in turf maintenance and installation.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team, and work under minimal supervision.
  • Ability to make decision in accordance with all City procedures, regulations, policies, directives and in accordance with all laws and legislations requirements.
  • Ability to work independently and be self-motivated to successfully complete work duties.
  • Ability to use tact and courtesy in contact with members of the public and staff and project a positive image for the City of Richmond at all times.
  • Ability to estimate jobs and stay within budget.
  • Must be familiar with administrative work such as timesheets, work reports, and computer skills relating to City operations, such as Microsoft Office and IPS.
  • Applicant must have the ability to plan out programs and maintain records as required.
  • Ability to successfully pass a Criminal Record check.

Qualifications and Experience:

Completion of Grade 12, supplemented by the completion of a recognized Diploma in Turf Management, plus a minimum of 2 (two) years of experience in turf and irrigation work is required, preferably in a supervisory capacity. Municipal experience is desired.

Licences & Registrations:

  • Valid IPM Certification
  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s Licence for the Province of British Columbia

Working Conditions:

  • Work is performed in an outdoor environment, subject to the regular rigors of heat and cold.
  • Exposure to dust, dirt, fumes, vibration, and noise from hand held power tools.
  • Exposure to chemicals, such as fertilizers and pesticides.
  • Work requires a degree of physical effort.
