Job Synopsis

The Retail Coordinator is accountable to the Shop Manager who will provide direction for the tasks, duties, and responsibilities of the Retail Coordinator. Work schedule is determined by the Shop Manager.

The Retail Coordinator is the driving force behind maintaining and modeling a high level of customer service through training and mentoring volunteers and staff. The Retail Coordinator trains and supervises retail volunteers, retail associates and supervises retail focused shop staff.

The Retail Coordinator ensures the high volume of inventory flows from the workroom to the retail floor, filling and maintaining the retail space, consulting with the Shop Manager and Production Coordinator to plan special events and seasonal displays.

The Retail Coordinator is a member of the Edmonton Thrift Management team which assists and supports the Edmonton Thrift Shop Manager in operating and managing the shop.

Minimum Years of Experience Required: 3 years in a retail setting, supervisory and Point of Sale experience required. Basic knowledge of the MS Office programs (Outlook, Word, Excel).
Education: High school diploma, college or polytechnic certificate
Other Qualifications:

  1. Valid AB Driver’s License
  2. Ability to lift up to 30lbs

Field Expertise:

  • Demonstrated strong point of sales and customer service skills.
  • Ability to train volunteers and staff in customer service and point of sales systems.
  • Ability to de-escalate situations on the retail floor between staff and customers.

Work & Organizational Skills:

  • Ability to make quick and thoughtful decisions.
  • Respect for and discretion in dealing with confidential materials.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs.
  • Requires >5 hours of intermittent standing or walking in a standard workday.
  • Written and verbal communication skills using today’s technologies.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to manage conflict with diplomacy and professionalism
  • Ability to diplomatically communicate and enforce shop policies by all team members, including volunteers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Help to keep the shop neat; assist and support volunteers.
  • Assist in the daily operation of the shop including sort, tag, price and put out donations;
  • Open and close the shop, cash out and reconcile registers and payment terminals, ensure cash-desk supplies are filled daily
  • Cash management: responsible for float preparation, bank deposits, daily reconciliation, process gift cards and maintaining appropriate restrictions on access to money and office safe.
  • Ensure shop policies are understood and adhered to by all team members on the retail floor.
  • Work closely with the Leadership Team on in-store sales, featured items and seasonal displays.
  • Responsible for appropriate, accurate and maintenance of departmental signage.
  • Provide support, supervision, training, scheduling and annual appraisals of staff in your area of focus.
  • Prepare and post schedules of daily tasks and areas of responsibility for staff and volunteers.
  • Schedule cashiers, retail associates and retail volunteers including daily break coverage.
  • Social media and marketing direction of the shop. Work closely with the Leadership Team in daily/seasonal marketing plans. Attend marketing meetings coordinated by MCCA.
  • Carry out other duties which arise in the work area or as assigned by the Shop Manager.

Customer Service:

  • Communicate the MCC mission and values of the Thrift Shop in a positive manner to donors, volunteers, staff, and customers.

  • Answer the phone; in-store public relations; keep MCC information stations well-stocked;

  • Operate the point of sale, ensuring accuracy in processing transactions.

  • Answer inquiries about MCC from constituency and public; communicate MCC's values.

  • Model nonviolent peacemaking through respectful daily interactions with staff and the public

Leadership Team Responsibilities

  • Be proactive in promoting positive public, staff and client relations

  • Ability to handle customer, donor and volunteer questions, concerns and conflicts in a professional manner

  • Provide back-up support for fellow Leadership roles in their absence or as needed, including opening and closing of shop

  • Together with the Shop Leadership Team, develop strategies to meet revenue and sales targets and reduction of expenses in your areas of focus

  • Work with the Leadership Team in the operation of the shop to ensure teamwork and a desirable working and shopping environment\

  • All Leadership Team members are expected to attend MCCA and Thrift Shop events, including volunteer appreciation events

Health & Safety

  • Adhere to Health & Safety Guidelines as established by law and the organization

  • Be proactive in maintaining clean workspaces that meet health & safety standards

Other

  • Assist with maintaining and coordinating the staff / volunteer room
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned
  • Maintain a high level of integrity, reflecting Christian respect and Christ's unconditional love to those with whom you work, including colleagues, partner agencies, the homeless and marginalized

Social Media Marketing

  • Together with the Leadership Team, bring forward ideas and recommendations to develop strategies to meet revenue and sales targets in your areas of focus.
  • Work with the Leadership Team in the operation of the shop to ensure teamwork and a desirable working and shopping environment
  • Manage social media communications
  • Develop and implement social media marketing plan to grow shop revenue
  • Coordinate online /e-commerce developments for the shop

Additional Information

Challenges: This is a physically demanding role. The Retail Coordinator is called upon to assist staff and volunteers on an ongoing basis, often requiring the need for quick decision making and creative problem solving
