Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY

The Resident Care Attendant provides expertise and assistance with personal care. As a valued member of Seniors Services, the Resident Care Attendant demonstrates a commitment to client safety by providing quality services in accordance with the organization’s mission and vision.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (not listed in order of priority)

  1. Provide personal care to clients in accordance with administrative policies and established standard, and recognized nursing principles learned.

  2. Participates in the overall activation process in a conscious effort to promote the optimum physical, social and emotional well-being of each client.

  3. Observing and reporting significant changes in client’s physical and emotional condition; documenting in PCC.

  4. Assist residents with activities of daily living, including but not limited to laundry, housekeeping, filling oxygen tanks as needed, assistance with personal care, bathing, weights, and stockings as required. Meal assistance – responsible for meal service, clean up and reset.

  5. Develop and maintain professional work ethics and effective working relationships with employees, clients, families, community groups, associations, institutions and others.

  6. Provide input into the development and revision of policies and procedures as they relate to Quality Risk Management programs. Complete fall and incident reporting in PCC.

  7. Effectively utilizes all electronic systems provided.

  8. Maintain a safe environment.

  9. Takes responsibility for own ethical behavior.

  10. Assisting in orientation of new staff members and students.

  11. Input with client care plan and assessment, and complete documentation as required in PCC.

  12. Respond immediately to client emergencies and the emergency response system: assess the situation: if necessary acquire assistance from registered staff.

  13. Participates in and demonstrates an understanding of resident safety principles and practices into all day to day activities. Follows all safe work practices and procedures and immediately communicates any activity or action which may constitute a risk to resident safety

  14. Perform other duties as assigned, including redeployment in emergency situations.

  15. Works in compliance with the Occupational Health & Safety Act and the Retirement Home Act, and their regulations in performing duties in a safe manner and follows all County of Simcoe Health & Safety policies, procedures and legislation.

  16. Maintain confidentiality in accordance with the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, and the Personal Health Information Protection Act.

  17. Participate in educational in-services: identify personal and group educational needs. Set personal work related goals: work toward the achievement of these goals with the Supervisor, Seniors Services.

EDUCATION, TECHNICAL SKILLS AND CERTIFICATION

  • Grade 12 OSSD. This job may be considered for educational equivalency in accordance with County Policy.

  • Ability to work with others in an inter-professional care team.

  • Good physical condition to meet the physical demands of the position.

  • Effectiveness working with minimal supervision with proven reliability and trustworthiness.

  • Good interpersonal and communication skills.

  • Good leadership and organizational skills.

  • First Aid certificate an asset.

  • Proof of annual CPR recertification.

  • Criminal Records Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening that is less than six (6) months old at time of hire.

  • As a condition of employment, candidates are required to submit documented results of TB testing, as per Public Health requirements.

  • Bilingualism in English and French is considered an asset (Georgian Village only).

EXPERIENCE

  • Some previous related experience would be considered an asset.

EFFORT

  • Some physical effort will be required when assisting clients with activities of daily living and performing housekeeping duties.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • May be exposed to illnesses/viruses while working with clients.
