About The Role The Editorial Content Creator supports the production, editing, and coordination of editorial content for SOCAN’s digital and print platforms, including the SOCAN website and Words & Music / Paroles & Musique magazine.

Working collaboratively with Communications & Marketing colleagues and internal stakeholders, this role contributes editorial content that supports organizational priorities, industry engagement, and member communications. The position requires strong writing and editing skills, research skills, and the ability to manage multiple assignments independently within established editorial plans and communications framework.

What You’ll Do / Key Responsibilities Editorial Content and Editing

  • Write original editorial content covering SOCAN initiatives, events, news, and music industry topics for SOCAN’s digital platforms and publications, including SOCAN Words & Music / Paroles & Musique Magazine.
  • Support the coordination and editing of weekly feature stories to be posted on the SOCAN website.
  • Contribute to the drafting, editing, and assembly of content for the SOCAN annual report.
  • Proofread and edit member-facing and internal communications content produced by colleagues prior to publication
  • Draft, edit, co-write, or proofread content for SOCAN executives, including the SOCAN CEO, and President, as assigned.

Events and Industry News Coverage

  • Attend SOCAN events or SOCAN-sponsored events to support written or video-based editorial coverage.
  • Assist with arranging coverage of SOCAN events or SOCAN-sponsored activities, events, conferences, and seminars where Editorial Content Creator is unable to attend.
  • Conduct off-camera interviews with SOCAN members for use on digital platforms, including coverage at major events such as the JUNO Awards and the SOCAN Awards.
  • Coordinate the gathering of photographs and post-event reporting.

Research

  • Conduct editorial research in preparation for interviews, features, and event coverage.
  • Support research for the annual SOCAN Awards on award recipients.Source photographs from internal and external partners, archives, and publicists, ensuring appropriate permissions and licenses are secured.

Relationships & Administration

  • Participate in editorial committee meetings to plan upcoming content aligned with organizational priorities, industry events, and advocacy initiatives.
  • Track scheduled SOCAN Events via bi-weekly meetings in collaboration with the events team to plan for and ensure pre-event announcements and post-event coverage on our platforms.
  • Connect with industry partners to gather information about upcoming events and activities for coverage.
  • Coordinate the translation of editorial content to ensure timely bilingual publication across platforms, working closely with Francophone editors and translation partners.
  • Track editorial-related expenses and approve supplier invoices in accordance with approved budgets and internal financial processes.

What You Will Bring / Qualifications & Experience

  • Post-secondary degree in journalism, editorial writing, communications, or a related field.
  • Minimum two years working experience as a digital/online content editor. Journalism experience and Canadian music industry knowledge are strong assets.
  • Digital literacy, with working knowledge of online platforms and tools (WordPress, Mailchimp, OneDrive, SharePoint, Copilot) MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook), Adobe Acrobat, and social media (Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, X, YouTube).
  • Familiarity with Content Management Systems.
  • Editorial Skills: Produces accurate, engaging content aligned with established editorial standards.
  • Communication: Demonstrates effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Organization & Prioritization: Manages multiple deadlines and assignments.
  • Collaboration: Works constructively with internal teams, contributors, and external partners.
  • Attention to Detail: Ensures accuracy, consistency, and quality across all published materials.
  • Adaptability: Responds effectively to changing priorities and emerging editorial needs.
