Job Description:

**POSITION SUMMARY:**Under the general supervision of the Supervisor – Landscape Architecture & Horticulture, leads the administration, planning, and development of the Centennial Botanical Conservatory collection and facility, and oversees the visual presentation for interior and exterior botanical displays throughout the facility. The Facility Curator is also responsible for the planning, programming and delivery of Public and Stakeholder services throughout the facility; and supports the production greenhouse operations.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develops and administers the short and long term planning of the Facility to include programming and services, visual presentation across all botanical displays and gardens throughout the Conservatory Facility & Park, production greenhouse operations, and all facility events.
  • Supervises and provides technical direction, instruction and training through demonstration to staff for the maintenance of the tropical, succulent, cacti, and seasonal plant collections; manages plant propagation, pruning, amendments to soil, and irrigation to achieve an ideal environment for the plant collections.
  • Maintains and develops inventory records system and online plant collection catalogue in collaboration with educational institution partnerships.
  • Creates and implements record sharing processes with the public and stakeholders; fostering relationships with horticulturists from other institutions to expand and enhance our current collection.
  • Manages, plans and operates the automated environmental controls, lighting, and audio system for the facility to support plant health and use of the facility as a venue.
  • Supervises the facility booking process for the Conservatory; including the authorization, planning and coordination of events, administration and planning of event bookings and fees, and liaises with external parties and stakeholders as required.
  • Leads the promotion and marketing of the facility through communications, including social media development and management, stakeholder and partnership development, and strategic development of programming and services to meet community needs.
  • Creates complex and integrated work plans and schedules to achieve operation and service delivery objectives, utilizing operations management planning systems, historical records, and other related data to forecast labour, materials, equipment, and other resource requirements to identify constraints and priorities for work plans and schedules.
  • Oversees service level delivery, programming, and safety requirements providing guidance and recommendations regarding assignment of staff, equipment and materials as required.
  • Provides safety and skill development training and hands-on demonstrations for staff to manage and maintain the horticultural collection throughout the facility.
  • Leads workshops and participate as the Corporation’s Horticulture specialist with stakeholder groups for event planning and implementation as required; supports and coordinates volunteers to ensure safe operational activities.
  • Monitors worker safety and ensures safety regulations, programs, and procedures are adhered to by staff and the public; coordinates safety meetings in support of the Leadhand as required.
  • Develops and maintains a standard operational procedures manual for the care and maintenance of the Horticulture displays.
  • Oversees and controls plant pests and diseases using integrated pest management techniques.
  • Collaborates with section supervisors to address immediate safety hazards in a timely manner.
  • Assesses staffing needs, makes recommendations on complement amendments and organizational structure.
  • Participates in policy and procedure development, and ensures section compliance with all related Provincial, Federal and Corporate regulations, requirements and policies.
  • Assists with investigations and responses to public complaints and requests for information and meets with the public, as required.
  • Participates in auditing and continual improvement of the performance of the Section.
  • Assists the Supervisor – Landscape Architecture & Horticulture in the development of the sections operating and capital budgets.
  • Participates in hiring, training/evaluating staff, and collective agreement compliance; recommends disciplinary action when necessary.
  • Performs such other related duties as may be assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience:

  • Degree in Horticulture, Landscape Architecture, and five years related practical experience in horticulture and greenhouse production operation that includes Tropical, Succulent, and Cacti displays; or
  • Degree in Visual Arts or Cultural Planning and Diploma in horticulture, and five years related practical experience in horticulture and greenhouse production operation that includes Tropical, Succulent, and Cacti displays
  • Minimum one (1) year of proven administrative, project management and supervisory experience, preferably in a municipal sector
  • Experience in community development, working with public, private and institutional stakeholders, and artists, contractors, and administration.
  • Experience in marketing and social media development and management, event programming and planning, and museum or gallery collection management
  • Proven understanding of horticulture and associated terminology to lead the planning, design, plant production, and plant maintenance, of a Municipal Conservatory
  • Proven understanding of manipulating growth environments control systems, infrastructure and equipment.
  • Pesticide License; is preferred

Skills/Abilities:

  • Ability to think and act strategically in a public sector environment, including the ability to anticipate emerging priorities and conceptualize and implement change strategies.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with superiors, subordinates, co-workers, stakeholders, and the public.
  • Ability to identify, understand, and meet/exceed the requirements of internal and external customers.
  • Strong project/time management, analytical/critical thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Strong leadership skills, including the ability to direct, motivate, evaluate, and recognize staff; proven ability to share skills and knowledge with others.
  • Must be capable of interpreting specifications, plant identification, construction drawings and maintenance/operations manuals.
  • Proven conflict management abilities and mediation skills.
  • Must be at an intermediate skill level with word processing and spreadsheet, and along with experience with graphic design software.
  • Must be competent within the meaning of the Occupational Health and Safety Act as amended

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • Must be able to attend meetings outside of business hours as required
  • Must travel to various work location and provide own transportation
  • Must undergo a successful Criminal Record and Judicial Matters Check (CRJMC)
  • Must remain a competent driver as defined by the Corporation
  • May be required to provide a successful driver’s record (uncertified)
  • Within 3 months of hire, must attain and maintain certification in the Growers pesticide and fumigation licensing categories of pesticide application
