The City of Courtenay invites applications for the position of "Culture & Events Coordinator” in the Recreation, Culture & Community Services Department. This is a union position and is subject to the terms and conditions outlined in the current Collective Agreement between the City and CUPE Local 556.

The Culture and Events Coordinator will serve as a key liaison for arts and culture between the City of Courtenay, cultural organizations, Indigenous communities, city staff, and the broader public. This role is responsible for implementing the City's Strategic Cultural Plan (SCP) by fostering partnerships, supporting cultural initiatives, developing cultural policies, coordinating public art projects, and integrating arts and culture into city planning and community development. Additionally, the position will oversee public engagement in cultural activities, coordinate city-led special events, and serve as the primary liaison for the special events permit process, ensuring smooth coordination between city departments and event organizers.

The Culture and Events Coordinator will have considerable knowledge of the current and emerging trends in the arts and culture sector and the principles, objectives and philosophy of arts and heritage, and as such will be responsible for the development, implementation, administration and evaluation ofcultural strategies and policies, culture programs and events related to the City’s Strategic Cultural Plan.

The position will work with a variety of City staff, culture service providers, and community culture organizations. The position requires an understanding of the importance of cross discipline collaboration, creative place making, the impacts of arts and culture on tourism and economic development, and diversity, equity and inclusion values with a demonstrated interest in public engagement and educational program planning and delivery in the arts.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts, Arts and Culture Management, Cultural Planning and Community Engagement, or a related field including but not limited to Planning, Tourism, Recreation and or Social Services combined with municipal cultural service planning experience.
  • Valid BC Class 5 Driver’s License.
  • Criminal Record Check.
  • Sound (3-4) years experience in municipal cultural planning, arts administration, and event coordination.
  • Some (1-2) years experience working with Indigenous communities and equity-seeking groups
  • Some (1-2) years project management experience
  • Some (1-2) years supervisory experience
  • Strong understanding of cultural policy development, grant writing, and funding structures.
  • Knowledge of Indigenous cultural protocols and decolonized planning practices.
  • Ability to facilitate interest-party engagement and public consultations.
  • Strong project management and organizational skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proven ability to plan and deliver community and city-wide events
  • Strong skills in grant writing and developing marketing material for cultural activities and programs
  • Strong understanding of the impact of arts, culture, heritage and events on tourism and economic development.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, GIS mapping, and digital marketing tools is an asset.
  • Ability to prioritize and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work effectively with the public, professional consultants, representatives of government, and City staff.
  • Strong interpersonal, analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to be creative and use sound judgment in making cultural planning recommendations.
  • Ability to work variety of shifts, including days, afternoon, evenings, weekday and weekends as required for operational requirements.
  • Ability to work well independently and as part of a team.

This is a regular, full-time position available immediately. The current (2024) hourly wage rate is $43.64 based on a 35-hour work week.
