The Opportunity

Are you an experienced and dedicated Operator with a can-do attitude? Do you have strong communication and top-notch customer service skills? Do you enjoy working collaboratively as part of a team? If so, this could be the perfect role for you! Reporting to the Manager, Environmental Services, the Operator II is responsible for performing a range of general and specific labour duties that require physical effort, agility and the use of semi-skilled techniques. This role also involves the safe and efficient operation of heavy equipment, light trucks and self propelled, single or multi function maintenance equipment. The Operator II is expected to exercise sound judgement, demonstrate initiative, and always work in a safe and responsible manner.

Responsibilities

  • Operate heavy equipment such as compactor, loader, excavator, water truck, skid steer, roll-off truck, and other equipment as required.
  • Perform litter control, snow shovelling, grass cutting, site cleanup, and general maintenance at the recycling center and landfill.
  • Operate compactor and loader for the purpose of spreading, packing, and covering garbage.
  • Lift, empty and sanitize garbage and organic carts and carry out cart repairs as required.
  • Perform random inspections on loads for acceptable and unacceptable materials.
  • Drive pick-up or other light trucks, load and unload vehicles, make deliveries, collect recyclables from City buildings and other pickups as required.
  • Operate equipment such as self-propelled and or/self riding lawn mowers.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education, Qualifications and Work Experience

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • 2 years of relevant experience in operating heavy equipment such as front loader, roll-off, excavator, backhoe, compactor, water truck, skid steer etc. waste management, or transportation operations. Previous municipal experience is considered an asset.
  • Possess an Alberta Landfill and Composting Facility Operator Certification or obtain within 18 months of the hire date. This certification must be maintained.
  • Possess and retain an Alberta Drivers License, minimum Class 3 with air brakes endorsement.
  • Strong interpersonal, customer service, oral, and written communication skills.
  • Strong attention to detail, with the ability to prioritize and adapt to changing priorities.
  • Standard First Aid and CPR, Defensive Driving, WHIMIS, and Work Zone Safety Tech, are all assets.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to operate heavy equipment and maintain logs and records.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite of tools, with the ability to use technology.
  • Willingness to learn and adapt to process changes.
  • Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety regulations and the desire to contribute to a positive safety culture by adhering to all safety standards under OH&S and by compliance with all safe work practices, policies, directives, and procedures.
  • Meet physical requirements, lifting of heavy goods and equipment up to 50lbs, standing and sitting for long periods of time, bending, kneeling, twisting etc., and working in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to provide a clear criminal record check prior to employment.
  • Ability to provide a driver’s abstract that demonstrates safe and responsible driving behaviour.
