Job Summary
The research assistant (RA) will support the principal investigator (Dr Kristin Campbell) and research staff and trainees in the Cancer Exercise & Physiotherapy lab (CEPL) on exercise oncology research projects. The RA will assist with coordinating implementation projects including “Does tailored referral support increase the reach of the Breast Cancer Endocrine Fitness (BE-FIT) program?” and the “CHALLENGE Implementation project” focused on behaviour change exercise programs for people with colorectal cancer*.*In addition, the RA will support additional clinical research studies for people living with a cancer diagnosis. The RA will have a strong background in research methodology (qualitative and quantitative), data collection and data management as well as and at least an introductory understanding of exercise and/or behaviour change strategies. The RA will support other staff (research manager, RAs) and trainees that are working on projects to recruit subjects, collect and analyze data as well as assist with co-design and knowledge mobilization initiatives.

Organizational Status
This position directly to the study Principal Investigator, (K. Campbell) and/or a designated senior member of the research team. The RA works closely with research staff, postdoctoral fellows and trainees in the CEPL.

Working Relationship:

The RA will work directly with the investigators who are mounting the studies. Responsibilities include working independently in a setting that involves varied and complex technical tasks such as recruitment and screening for various studies, data collection and data entry, research study coordination and scheduling, supervising volunteers associated with the studies as well as building and maintaining relationships with key interested parties and/or knowledge users in the community.

Work Performed

  • Creating and reviewing educational and intervention materials for health care professionals and for people living with a cancer diagnosis.
  • Managing and collecting study outcome data (quantitative and qualitative).
  • Screening participants for eligibility to participate in research projects.
  • Overseeing daily operations of the facility.
  • Maintaining the emergency action plan for the facility.
  • Supervising, scheduling and training student helpers and volunteers.
  • Writing reports and weekly updates on the relevant research projects.
  • Supporting recruitment and outreach efforts.
  • Carrying out all other related duties as required in keeping with the qualifications and requirements of positions in this classification

Consequence of Error/Judgement
Inappropriate judgement would compromise the quality of the research study, related data acquisition and the reporting of research outcomes.

Inappropriate judgement would also compromise research success, participant safety and ethical approval, thus affect the credibility of the Investigators.

Supervision Received
Employee will work with general supervision, receiving instruction only on new or unusual problems or on matters which depart significantly from established policy and procedures.

Supervision Given
Employee will have supervisory responsibilities for a small group of employees at lower classifications and/or volunteers. The position requires a strong independent work ethic and a candidate capable of setting their priorities within a given framework, and working within agreed-upon milestones and timelines.

Working Conditions
Human subject research laboratory environment.

Minimum Qualifications
Completion of a relevant technical program or a university degree in a relevant discipline and a minimum three years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Education & Experience:

  • Minimum of an undergraduate degree in kinesiology, psychology or related field.
  • A minimum of 3 years of related experience as a research assistant and/or exercise professional with behaviour change training with clinical populations.
  • Experience overseeing and administering research projects.
  • Experience with managing data collection and participant tracking for research projects.
  • Experience with exercise programming, behaviour change models, and /or working with people living with and beyond cancer preferred.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Demonstrated ability to organize work and communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.

  • Excellent organizational skills including ability to manage multiple tasks.

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a team environment.

  • Demonstrated ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.

  • Demonstrated excellence in organizational and decision-making skills.

  • Attention to detail and accuracy.

  • Discretion, tact and confidentiality.

  • Emergency action planning skills.

  • Excellent proficiency using word processing, spread sheet, presentation and design programs.

  • Experience with on-line behaviour change platforms, and/or AI platforms, including chat bots, preferred.
