About the role

Do you have experience in program development and delivering interpretive programs to a wide range of audiences? Are you interested in helping connect people to natural and cultural features of our Regional Parks? If so, we want you on our Parks Team!

As the successful candidate as the Park Interpreter, you will be responsible for delivering interpretive programs that educate and engage the public in the natural and cultural features of regional parks. You will create, coordinate, and present educational content to a wide variety of audiences including school, community, and indigenous groups.

You will:

  • Program Development and Delivery:
    • Create, coordinate, and deliver interpretive programs for schools, community organizations, and the public, ensuring alignment with educational and interpretive standards.
    • Prepare interpretive materials, including scripts, graphics, presentations, and visuals.
  • Event Support and Participation:
    • Assist in park, community and volunteer events, and promote conservation efforts and community engagement.
  • Public Awareness and Presentations:
    • Assist with outreach efforts through promotional materials, social media, and newsletters to increase park engagement.
    • Represent the RDCO at public events such as open houses and community meetings, delivering interpretive presentations to educate and engage the public.
  • External Partnerships:
    • Collaborate with external contacts to identify opportunities for new or expanded park programs and community events.
  • Administrative and General Support:
    • Assist with administrative duties, including grant applications, program planning, tracking park, program and facility use statistics, and providing front desk support at the Environmental Education Centre (EECO).
    • Identify hazards and follow risk management and incident reporting procedures
    • Contribute to various park operations, ensuring smooth execution of events, effective program delivery, and excellent visitor service.
    • Assist with financial duties, including tracking expenditures.
  • Other duties as assigned.

The ideal candidate for this role will have a diploma in a related area and a minimum of one year of related experience. You must have a clear vulnerable sector check, First Aid Level 1, and a valid BC drivers license. Accreditation with a professional interpretive organization is an asset. This position requires sound knowledge of local natural and cultural history, as well as strong public speaking skills to deliver this information to a wide range of audiences. Strong customer service and time management skills are a must, and you must excel at working in a team environment, as well as independently when required.

This is a relief position, meaning on call as needed with no set schedule. This position could work shifts on any day of the week, Monday to Sunday. Standard hours are 8:00 am to 4:00 pm, but flexibility may be required to work outside of those hours to meet operational needs. This position pays $38.24 per hour.
