The Manitoba Government is seeking multiple highly motivated Environmental Remediation Specialists to join the Department of Environment and Climate Change. This recruitment includes two permanent positions and two term positions (with appointments ending in 2030). In addition, two more term positions are currently under review, with terms expected to end in 2029.
The Environmental Programs and Remediation Branch oversees the Orphaned and Abandoned Mines program, the Environmental Liabilities Sites program, and the Quarry Rehabilitation program. These programs address the environmental and public safety concerns of identified sites within the various program. Remediation, rehabilitation, site management, and monitoring work is advanced and, when required, implemented to reduce environmental and health risks, support public safety, protect previous investments in infrastructure, and reduce the provinces environmental liability.
The Manitoba government also provides an excellent benefits package which includes extended health, health spending, dental, vision, long term disability, supportive employment, sick leave, paid vacation and maternity/parental leave, and a defined pension plan.

Must be physically capable of performing the required duties of the position such as:
- Some exposure to potentially hazardous conditions when visiting work sites.
- Continuous standing, continuous walking and lifting and carrying up to 40 lbs.
- Working outdoors in both winter and summer in extreme temperatures and weather conditions.

Must have a valid Class 5 driver's licence.

Occasional overnight stays may be required when travelling to distant work sites or attending conferences or out of office meetings.

Occasional visits to work sites within the province by ground, water or air, which may require overnight stays (possibly in a camp environment). While at outdoor work sites, exposure to heavy construction equipment, noise, dust, hand/power tools, moving equipment, slip-trip-fall, carrying/twisting, insects, excavations, chemical and assorted types of waste exposures, animals, open water, vegetation and sharp objects, work alone and remote environments.

Some positions may require a satisfactory criminal record check.
Qualifications:
Essential:
- Degree in Environmental Science or a related discipline with relevant work experience in an environmental field, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.
- Experience in site remediation including a variety of remedial options and treatment technologies, remediation project management, environmental monitoring and site management.
- Excellent written communication skills including the ability to write technical reports and correspondence for a variety of audiences.
- Ability to research, and make recommendations to improve programs and policies, and to maintain operational guidelines.
- Experience in the evaluation and analysis of scientific data, reports, and technical documents.
- Effective verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate technical and non-technical information to a variety of audiences.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with various stakeholders.
- Ability to work independently under limited supervision with strong organizational and time management skills.
Desired:
- Working knowledge of environmental legislation such as the Environment Act, Contaminated Sites Remediation Act, Dangerous Goods Handling and Transportation Act, or the Mines and Mineral Act.
- Experience in contract management, managing government-funded programs, and/or provincial grants.
- Project management experience.
- Experience managing budgets.
- Ability to read, write, and verbally communicate in French.
Duties:
Reporting to the program manager in each unit, the Environmental Remediation Specialist will be responsible for the remediation of quarries, contiminated sites or orphaned mine sites across Manitoba. This includes project management, contract management, and coordination of remediation projects within the branch.
