How You Will Make an Impact

As a Housing Support Worker, you will enhance the dignity and quality of life of tenants living with the challenges of substance use, mental illness, and a history of homelessness. Working within a multidisciplinary team, you will help tenants maintain stable housing, develop independent living skills, and foster a sense of community and belonging.

  • Deliver one-to-one assistance to tenants transitioning to and maintaining permanent housing, supporting them in developing life skills such as cooking, grocery shopping, and home maintenance.
  • Support tenants with maintenance requests, rent payments and resolution of rental arrears.
  • Offer supportive counselling, conflict resolution, and advocacy to help tenants achieve personal goals and maintain successful tenancies.
  • Participate in case conferences and work closely with Addiction Counsellors, Property Management staff, and other community partners to provide coordinated support.
  • Identify community needs and contribute to the development and facilitation of tenant-driven programs, including social, recreational, and educational activities.
  • Encourage tenant participation through committees and community events that foster empowerment and inclusion.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential tenant files, complete required reports and statistics, and contribute to program evaluation and improvement efforts.
  • Work in compliance with all Good Shepherd Health and Safety policies and the Occupational Health and Safety Act to ensure a safe environment for tenants, staff, and visitors.

What You'll Bring to Our Team

  • Social Service Worker or Social Worker diploma/degree, or equivalent education and experience.
  • Addictions Certificate from a recognized institution and minimum 2 years of related experience supporting individuals with substance use and housing challenges.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in a supportive housing setting preferred.
  • A demonstrated commitment to the mission values of availability, responsibility, adaptability, quality and dignity is essential
  • Knowledge of Harm Reduction, Concurrent Disorders, and Psychosocial Rehabilitation Principles.
  • Excellent interpersonal, counselling, and conflict-resolution skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication, organizational, and computer skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Commitment to anti-racist, anti-oppressive, and culturally competent practice.
  • CPR/First Aid and WHMIS certification.
  • Valid Ontario driver's license is an asset.
  • Demonstrated understanding of workplace health and safety practices and understanding of an employee's responsibility under current legislation
