Payroll Work Leader

Annual salary: $70K - $76K

Position Highlights
Holds work leadership responsibilities for and performs the same duties as the Payroll Coordinator job. Investigates and

resolves complex pay related issues. Acts as signing officer on bank accounts and conducts training on new /revised

processes or procedures for payroll staff. Administers client biweekly payrolls ($700 million annually) and third party vendor

payments of $250 million annually– pension plan, tax source deductions (CRA), union dues, voluntary deductions, etc.

What you'll do

  1. Holds work leadership responsibilities for and performs the same duties as the Payroll Coordinator job.

  2. Administers payrolls on a bi-weekly basis following the technical schedule for submission and execution of batch jobs;

analyzing various pre and post audit reports for warnings/errors taking corrective action and ensuring successful

completion, moving to next dependency in the process. Escalates issues impacting timeliness of completion (SLA impact)

to management. Creates bi-weekly payroll direct deposit file for employees and the bi-weekly financial posting to the

general ledger of $25 - $30 million.

  1. Calculates and prepares for approval payments documents to third party vendors for garnishments, employee and

employer taxes, employee voluntary deductions, and employer provided benefit plans ( pension, WCB, etc.). Interacts with

third party vendors to resolve any issues or discrepancies.

  1. Administers Board of Director Payrolls, including administration of personal data.

  2. Acts as backup for Tier 2 Help Desk by investigating and resolving complex issues.

  3. Provides guidance and mentoring to Payroll Coordinator job.

  4. Performs other related duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities Required:

Sound practical knowledge of Payroll, Time Entry and HR and Accounting Systems.

Ability to prepare and process journal entries and investigate and take corrective action for variances in general ledger

accounts.

Sound practical knowledge of privacy legislation regarding personal data and FOI policies.

Sound practical knowledge of the cross discipline function of Time entry for HR and financial reporting.

Demonstrated time management and organization skills to meet tight bi-weekly deadlines.

Must be tactful and exercise discretion given the personal nature of the information.

Demonstrated and sound interpersonal customer service communication skills.

Attention to detail for accuracy and timeliness understanding SLA and Canada Revenue Agency remittance deadlines and

associated penalties if not met.

Ability to make judgements within prescribed guidelines.

What you bring

Post-Secondary diploma with business courses; plus Certified Payroll Manager (CPM) certification; plus completion of 3rd

level professional accounting designation or equivalent education/experience.

Minimum four (4) years of full cycle payroll experience and three (3) years of general accounting experience with exposure

to Payroll and Benefit General Ledger accounts in a large complex multi-unionized organization.

Must have used large Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems with experience in HR, Time, Payroll and General

Ledger modules (SAP/PeopleSoft, etc.).

Comprehensive knowledge of statutory requirements and legislation (such as Employment Standards, Workers

Compensation, Canada Revenue Agency, etc.).
