About The Role Canadian Blood Services is looking for a Regular Full-Time Analyst - Systems III (Database Administrator - Cloud & Enterprise) to join our dynamic IT Infrastructure Operations and Delivery team in Ottawa.

The IT Infrastructure Operations & Delivery team is responsible for managing and maintaining Canadian Blood Services’ IT infrastructure to ensure the smooth and efficient operation of its technology systems.

Reporting to the Manager, Data Centre Services, you will serve as an Analyst - Systems III, providing advanced technical leadership and operational support for enterprise database and operating systems across on-premises and cloud environments. You will ensure database architecture, performance optimization, high availability, disaster recovery, and infrastructure reliability while maintaining secure, compliant, and high-performing systems that support Canadian Blood Services’ operations.

Formula for Success

  • Applying your skills in database administration and architecture, you will install, configure, patch, and upgrade enterprise database platforms while designing and implementing database architectures across on-premise and Azure environments.
  • Utilizing your skills in database migrations and platform modernization, you will lead database migrations, version upgrades, and cross-platform transitions, including clustering, replication, and high-availability configurations, while troubleshooting complex database and infrastructure issues.
  • Drawing on your skills in performance optimization, you will monitor and tune database performance at the system and query levels, identifying and resolving performance bottlenecks and optimizing database integration with development teams.
  • Employing your skills in automation and DevOps practices, you will automate routine database administration tasks and deployments to improve operational efficiency and reliability.
  • Using your skills in high availability and disaster recovery, you will design and maintain backup, failover, and disaster recovery solutions, including strategy development, testing, and ensuring data integrity and compliance.
  • Building on your skills in database security and governance, you will implement and maintain security controls, including encryption and access management, while ensuring alignment with corporate policies and regulatory requirements.
  • Demonstrating your skills in technical leadership and collaboration, you will mentor team members, contribute to infrastructure modernization initiatives, produce technical documentation and reports, and support a 24×7 operational environment including on-call rotation.

Desired Education And Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field, with a minimum of 7 years of enterprise database administration experience, including at least 3 years supporting Azure-based database services and demonstrated expertise in high-availability architectures, migrations, and disaster recovery planning. Certifications (preferred): Oracle Certified Professional (OCP), Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator Associate, and Microsoft Certified: Azure Solutions Architect Expert.
  • Hands-on experience with Oracle RAC, ASM, and Data Guard, including performance tuning, high-availability configurations, and disaster recovery strategies.
  • Skilled in SQL Server Always On, clustering, replication, and performance optimization, with experience supporting enterprise-level deployments.
  • Experience administering PostgreSQL, MySQL, Azure SQL Database, and Managed Instances, with knowledge of performance tuning, query optimization, and cloud database best practices.
  • Proficient in automation, scripting, and Infrastructure-as-Code practices to improve operational efficiency and reliability.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills across technical and business audiences, ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced operational environment, and solid understanding of ITIL and project management best practices.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities with demonstrated ability to mentor and support cross-functional teams.

What You Can Expect

  • This role operates in a hybrid work environment, with a requirement to be onsite at a Canadian Blood Services location at least 40% of the time (approximately 2 days per week).
  • The regular work schedule is Monday to Friday, 37.5 hours per week (7.5 hours per day).
  • Occasional lifting of equipment up to 30 lbs may be required.
  • Participation in a 24/7 operational support model, including on-call rotation, is required.
