Engineering Team Lead – Mechanical Site Engineering

Annual salary: $ 127,900.00 - 161,800.00
Position Highlights
The BC Hydro Site Engineering team has an exciting opportunity for a Mechanical Site Engineering Team Lead. The
Mechanical Site Engineering team works on our construction projects and performs commissioning engineering and
coordination on new mechanical equipment - making sure that construction and commissioning are done right. If you are a
self-starter who enjoys working with people on large and complex construction projects and working on new BC Hydro
transmission and generation stations equipment, then we invite you to join the Site Engineering team.
The team is spread across the province to be close to the work and consists of engineers and consultants who provide
support to complex construction projects, performing construction site engineering, coordinating commissioning activities on
highly complex projects to ensure proper planning, staging, and resourcing for testing activities, and completing mechanical
equipment testing and commissioning on new equipment. The team then helps complete the equipment turn-over. You will
be providing leadership to this team and working closely with other Construction, Engineering, Equipment Testing and
Commissioning, and Maintenance teams.
What you'll do
- You manage a team of mechanical engineers who are at the heart of the construction and commissioning, making sure
that team members have the required expertise and tools to complete the work with high quality, value, on schedule, and on
budget.
- You use your technical expertise in mechanical equipment design, installation, and commissioning to provide technical
leadership, instruction, and guidance to the team. You manage the team performance to meet objectives.
- Be a leader in working safely and efficiently. Demonstrate strong commitment to safety and create a safety culture where
safety is first, and employees are recognized for safe performance and compliance with safety regulations and safe work
practices.
- Establish technical work procedures and develop engineering standards/guidelines. Review, enhance and develop
methods, procedures, and technical standards to take advantage of new technology, improve department effectiveness and
efficiency.

Lead by example by demonstrating BC Hydro’s commitment to a diverse, respectful, and inclusive workforce.

Ensure the team adheres to BC Hydro and industry standards, policies, practices and procedures. You are an advocate
for professional practice and ensure team members are knowledgeable about professional practice requirements and that
their work complies with the Engineers and Geoscientists BC Quality Management Guidelines.
- Act as a positive role model for the business fostering teamwork and engagement of team members to contribute to
achieving the company goals.
- Support the Department Manager on various initiatives. The Team Lead may support Company wide initiatives and be an
active part in developing those initiatives.
- Coach/mentor and develop your team. You focus on building the engineering capabilities of the team, ensuring that your
team has the training, staffing, tools, and long-term expertise we need to be at the top of our game to take on tough
technical problems.
- Drive ongoing improvements in the planning for and execution of work by appropriately resourcing and cultivating the
team’s capabilities to meet the capital plan – both their technical and soft skills.
- Develop and maintain effective working relationships with equipment suppliers, consultants, contractors, and other parts of
BC Hydro.
What you bring
-
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering recognized by Canadian Universities.

Registered as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng) in the Province of British Columbia.

A minimum of 10 years’ progressive experience in engineering related to mechanical equipment construction, testing and
commissioning. Experience in Hydro Power Generation environment is an asset.

Approachable, takes initiative, and is a proven problem solver.

Demonstrated ability to lead, or has performed in a leadership capacity.

Proven abilities of conflict management, leadership, communication, team building, coaching/mentoring, and interpersonal
skills. You bring excellent organizational and management skills.

You’ve been successful, creative, and can show how you have influenced outcomes and met objectives.

Proven ability to deliver in matrix organization.

Demonstrated technical writing and presentation skills. A clear communicator comfortable with making presentations to
peers and senior management.

Demonstrated initiative in identifying, pursuing, and championing process improvements and other business initiatives.

A solid understanding of project management and the project management life cycle.

Valid Class 5 Driver's License.
